Insects are animals?

I was under the impression that going vegan meant getting the animal products out of my diet. Where does honey and silk (not the soy milk, actual silk) come in to play?

OK- last comment here for real (I think!):

JenD--

Cost/benefit analysis...

Positives: you don't have to go through a 5-minute diatribe to order food at restaurants/ get palatable food from institutions like hospitals; you demonstrate an enthusiasm for vegan ideals, however 'imperfectly', which could encourage those around you to see veganism as something worth exploring; by id'ing with a group you feel MOST like, you continually envision yourself in this light, making it more likely that you'll make decisions in keeping with these ideals, in the future; and by insisting on defining yourself on your own terms, you assert your independent self and values (rather than caving to the whim of others), which is personally satisfying.

Negatives: you might incur the ire of up to (according to vrg.org) 0.9% of the population (although, with diversity expected within any human population, some self-id'd vegans will either share your views or not presume to be annoyed by them... so prob'ly fewer than that).

Hmmm.... I say go for it!

And AML--

You don't need anyone's permission to call yourself vegan! From your past posts, you seem like a sweet, kind, thoughtful person who is trying her best to live a kind life... Don't let anyone else tell you what you are or aren't!  :)

Everyone who uses this site is more alike than different. Bickering over semantics is not what a veg-centric life is about...Yay for veg-heads of all types! Let's just celebrate and appreciate our common ground, and relax about the rest. Humans are perpetual works-in-progress... where someone is today isn't necessarily where they'll be in a year. We should support each other on the road, here, and not get lost in the details: the trees are ok, but the forest is great!

"Vegan" takes care of it where you are?  I want to live in Arkansas.  (Okay, not really - you have snow.)  Here in SoCal, even though we have a plenitude of vegan restaurants, if I'm at a regular one I still have to specify no meat, dairy, or eggs.

ya people are still pretty ignorant about what vegan food is... i swear most think it's a "vegetarian" that eats fish and poultry... though some do actually know what it entails

I appreciate your comments and encouragement, Mama. Thank you! I'm not completely stuck in my ways or I never would have come as far as I have. I will continue to try to be better in all kinds of areas, including veganism.

I am always very  pleasantly surprised when I order in a regular restaurant, asking for no cheese, sour cream, etc. and they ask, "You want it vegan?" It is happening way more often the past couple years. That must be a good sign!

Why not just say what it is?
"I eat primarily a vegan diet, however i do allow honey, beeswax, and the occasional egg, which are not vegan products."

Okay, I promise from now on when asked if I'm vegan I'll say, "I eat a primarily vegan diet except for one day a year when I have a donut that contains a portion of an egg and I follow a vegan lifestyle except for my used car that has leather and I still use a few beauty products that contain honey and wax from a source that I have researched and feel comfortable supporting although I am opposed to large-scale honey operations."

I didn't know you gals in California still had problems ordering vegan at restaurants--this kind of makes me feel better about the difficulties I have to go through in the Midwest. "But you still eat fish, right?!"

Wait, wait, wait. I don't even think they use film for movies anymore? I think it's all digital. I don't use camera film. I don't kill bugs on purpose, and I don't feed my pet meat.

Yesssssss, I can still be in the elitist club.

::)

Ok woah! So, do vegans only take on pets that can be weened off of meat? What would a vegan do with a pet python? I got mine to eat prekill finally, but I don't know that it's possible to get one to survive on tofu and vitamins. And what about my jackson chameleon with a strict diet of crickets. What for those animals? Have there been any studies on this?

I have no idea! I just have a dog.

I don't think I understand the mentality of not allowing an animal to eat meat. Is this what all vegans do? Because it seems to me that an omnivore deciding to make a personal choice to eat only veggies is one thing, but forcing a carnivore on the same path seems like anti-veganism, being as how it most likely is not within the best interest of the pet. Dogs are not omnivores like us.  They are very adaptable, but just because they can survive on an omnivorous diet doesn't mean it is the best diet. My dog loves the food we've been cooking, but I'm not going to take the one thing away from him that he was meant to eat. How will vegans spread their ideals to the animals in the wild? Or will they only torture them once they are domesticated?

I went through about 20 different resources after remembering basics about omnivores vs carnivores from grade school (and thanks to a refresher course from a relative that just disowned me over this diet, incredible). That's neat though that they thought the same. Still seems like you're swimming upstream. I thought the vegan movement was "little impact" and all that jazz. Isn't restructuring an animal's diet to only include foods it was not designed for in fact a major impact?

Did you look at the two links I just offered? It's all there.

All I saw was stuff posted by vegans with an agenda. Anything by someone with a phd? Or a non-biased party? A link for a forum on vegweb, and then a link for a vegan trying to sell a book. Funny. I'd like to see a real scientific study.

I guess you'll have to do your own research to find sources then, because I'm happy with my choice. And so is my dog!
