30 Day Vegan Challenge

I know VeggieBoards has a 30 vegan challenge thread, but is there one here?  So many great new forums, but I didn't find one, and wasn't real sure where to post this one...new vegan?  food? so I just picked chitchat.

Day #1 of being Vegan.  I was going to keep it a secret that way if I slip no one knows.  But if I'm to transition to veganism I shouldn't be afraid to talk about it and shouldn't be afraid of others judgements should I fail.  I told my co-workers and now I'm telling you.  w00t!

Anyone care to join me?

Yay Tweety, well done.
I think the whole eating out gets easier once you have confidence to ask for variations on what's on the menu.
Like HH said earlier, make sure you ask for substitutions, not just taking things off....so whenever I go for mexican and have fajitas I'll ask for no cheese and no sour cream - can I have extra salsa instead of the cheese and extra guacinsteadd of the sour cream.  They'll still charge you the same even if there's no substitutions, so may as well get your moneys worth.

Thanks so much guys.  You have always been my inspiration.  I know without Vegweb, I wouldn't even considered it.  I feel very good and free about my decision.  I didn't realize what a burden on my pysche this issue was until I cross over to the dark side.

About restaurants, there's an Indian place here.  Can I ask for food not sauteed or cooked in ghee?  How do you say "ghee"....is it soft sounding like "gee whiz" sound like a "j" or hard like "g" like in girl?

It's like 'girl.' Yeah! You just have to ask questions, and make requests. :)

Yep, hespedal that's it!  It's my new favorite.  I had a little extra leftover from this week's food budget and splurged.  Love it!

Thanks Ally!

Eating out is a challenge if you dont get to pick where to go.  Chain American restaurants are horrible places to try to eat.  Bland pasta and marinara or iceberg salads.  Blah blah blah!

But as you found out Mexican is so doable.  You can probably also find burritos with rice and beans in them.  Some places even offer veggies in those!  Just always remember to ask for No cheese and No sour cream and send it back if they forget and slather it on.  Never be afraid to do that.  If my plate comes out askew, I apologize and say "Please no cheese, no sour cream.  I'm allergic to dairy."  That usually fixes things right up!  Yes I exaggerate but I would rather do that then get sick from them slipping me cheese.

Oh and always open up that mystery burrito/veg burger/wrap/fried mystery first!  That way if it looks wrong or meaty you can have someone taste test it before you do.  I had one place swear up and down they brought me a veggie burger but the manager took one look and said "That's turkey" while I swore it was some form of meat.

Places I have good luck in: Mexican, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and occasionally Thai.  Just speak to as many people as possible who work there.  Be clear as to what you want "No Meat. No Dairy." Throw in a "No Fish" if you have to.  And if they give you crap like "Depends on how vegan you are because we season all our food with Chicken Broth." they are obviously a crappy restaurant to begin with so no loss there.

My only holiday advice is cook for yourself.  Its work and can be hard to get family or friends to not mind you bringing your own meal, but its worth it to me.  Plus you can blow people away by bringing awesome vegan pie or cake!

Thanks Cali for the support.  I think I might be India for Thanksgiving, but Christmas will be a challenge.  I'm already collecting ideas in my head for things to bring.  This is actually the first Christmas I'll be off in my 17 years as a nurse, as my department closes.

I'm just going to have to be one of "those people" and my friends will get over themselves.  But they love me.  LOL
