Hey Bookmama and Bookpapa, seems like you have at least one other vegan over there in Gainesville, GA! She just won an award from PETA. I'm surprised they even posted it on the local news website run by a very conservative Gainesville based radio station. Oh well.....just thought I'd share. :)

omg, I am truly amazed! Who'd a thunk it. :D I have often wondered if there were "others" out there in this area and really couldn't imagine that there were. In all our 30 years of being vegetarian we have seldom run across any other vegetarians, much less vegans, anywhere in Georgia. I'm sure they're out there (there are even some on VegWeb) but we haven't met them because we tend not to be very social. Our views on so many things run contrary to the views of the mainstream here. I will say that bookpapa found out recently that someone he's been acquainted with for several years is vegan. Non-confrontational types (of which I am one) tend to keep their mouths shut. ;)
I'm always impressed when anyone, much less a young person, is so active, vocal, and obviously successful. Thanks for the happy news, Dave! :)

That's both sides of the coin. There may be more veg*ns out there, but in Georgia it's a kept secret. My impression of where I used to live (Arcata, CA) was that the population of the town was mostly veg*n. Now I live in the non-coastal area of SoCal (more veg*ns at the coast) and a few months back I met a vegan at the grocery store. I was so excited I got a little light-headed.
If you consider Athens to be North Georgia, then you shouldn't have too much trouble finding vegans there. Just head to The Grit (vegetarian restaurant) and ask around. :)

Yeah, Athens is just about an hour away from here. We've even lived there (I was in school for 6 years back in the dark ages and we lived there in the 80s for a year and a half after our second child was born while bookpapa was on sabbatical) and love it! Been to The Grit, too, but it's been a long time--and I was lacto-ovo at the time. I'm always afraid to assume what dietary orientation anyone is and I'm not likely to ask unless I get some non-verbal clues somehow. Every time I've been there it's been with omnis. :D
