Dissection.....

So I am taking all my classes online this semester for college (Ivy Tech Community College). I ordered all my books for classes and this "lab kit" for Anatomy and Physiology. I did not know this lab kit had a fetal pig in it, I was really shocked when I opened the package. In the class you are suspected to dissect and dispose of the the animal responsibly. I am to say the least shocked well for obvious reasons. I sent an email to my teacher stating I was Jewish (but technically I'm not) and couldn't be around the unclean and non-kosher animal because of my religious beliefs and hat I have disgraced my family and religion with this in my house.

I was thinking of all the choices I could of made for objection, personal reasons like diet and environment are present but are not as strong. I felt religion was my strongest suit for objection and was a more powerful than a personal reason.

What are your thoughts on my white lie?

I suspect I may just get no grade for the assignment so I guess that means I must do really well in this course and kind of show the teacher I don't need this thing and show the staff of the college they don't need to do this horrible thing.

Has anyone objected and/or abstained from dissection in one of your classes?

I don't think it was necessary.  People who opt out of the dissection labs for whatever reason are just given an alternate assignment, like a research paper.  Or they don't dissect and are expected to study from pictures and take the test anyway. There are a lot of virtual pig dissection resources online.  (Plus, I'm not sure that kosher dietary rules apply to a pig dissection.)

Honestly, I'm more bothered by the fact that you said you were Jewish to get out of it. I'm pretty sure that there are a number of people who opt out of dissection classes and that as HH said there are already alternative assignments that can be undertaken. I doubt you'd be the first person to opt out on non-religious ethical grounds.

I share Catski's sentiments. You could have simply stated it is against your beliefs, and left it at that. IMO, there was/is no need for you to go to the degree you did in drawing it out. This is more than a white lie.

i dunno... i find that that was the first excuse u thought to come up with... should have asked vegwebbers first they r always so good at helping with these things :) ... i have no problem with ur excuse... religion can be a very valid excuse though i know nothing about jewish religion and since u don't either ur excuse might not even make sense?!?! and i can't believe they sent u a dead pig! yucky :( ya maybe just stating that is against your ethical values is enough said (for next time)... this is a good topic though i was wondering about what i would do when this came up for when i have a kid... ya maybe just ask the teacher if their is an alternate assignment u can do
