I'm baaaaack!

I was gone for awhile because I fell off the bandwagon.  I went back to being omni  :'( :-[.

It was stress.  I was looking for a new job, was very depressed there on Long Island, and meat and dairy rich foods were comfort foods, though they made me feel like crap, but they tasted good and it made life a little easier.  I didn't feel like cooking because I was depressed, and I was broke, so I resorted to fat, cholesterol filled foods to feed myself and my son.

But I found  a new job, and found that I am no longer depressed.  I am interested in cooking.  Also, my son was having problems with the dairy, I think he has an allergy.  Unfortunately, the new daycare here won't let me bring in food for him, but he does at least get soymilk there, but they don't give him dairy.  He is doing much better without that, and I don't think he eats much there anyway, he is always so HUNGRY when he comes home.

So, I have gone back to veganism, though I refuse to call myself "vegan" because I do want the option of eating meat occasionally.  But to be honest, since moving here I have lost all desire to eat meat, and dairy now  makes my stomach turn.  It really was a sudden change, but a welcome one.  I just kind of slipped back to vegan without really intending to.  I have been vegan again now for a week, solid, but going back that way for a month.  Honestly, now I am not vegan because I want to help animals or the planet, I am not nobel enough for that, it is for me.  I feel better.  I hope t his time it sticks.

Hey, SQ! Good that you got a better job and are finding out what's best for you and your boy. I almost wrote "say hi to him for me" but, yeah...like that's gonna impress him.  ;D
If your son was used to eating homemade wholesome food I wouldn't be surprised he refused daycare food. Even for small groups it can be pretty "institutional."

I do want the option of eating meat occasionally.

And we're supposed to be jumping for joy about this?

I didn't mean to offend anyone, I was just saying that I don't want to be restricted by giving my self a label because that I found out is a sure way to make me fail.  If I leave the option to eat meat occasionally, then it isn't a restricted food and I like everybody else seem to be drawn to things I can't have.  I am just proud of myself for being 99% vegan.  For me, that is a good thing, and I realize it is the best I can do.  Really, it is.

Better then most Americans!!!!!!!  No McD's for dinner for me...yuk!  I will take general taus tofu anyday over that yucky Big Mac!

welcome back! that sucks about the daycare not letting you bring in food... i can understand. Mine does allow it and i do it as frequently as i have time for. I told my daughter to start telling the daycare lady who's family and her are deeply involved in the SAD that she doesn't want french fries, she would rather have carrots. i don't know if you little guy is old enough to defend himself but it might work. :)

SQ- Good for you for trying. How is NY. Why did you move ( I must have missed something).

I also think it's good to not label yourself, if it's not something you want.

Too many people on here take the role of the vegan police. As long as your open to the idea of veganism, then what's the big deal? As long as you're not discussing hunting, eating meat, etc on here out of respect for others.

Anyway, that sucks about your kid's daycare :(. I hope you can figure something out that works for you.

Why did you move to Long Island?! I thought you lived somewhere with mountains?

Okay, it seems that I have to catch you all up on some things.

First off, I am on week two now of vegan diet.  I like it.  I find that by not giving myself the vegan label, then I have zero desire to eat animal products, wierd, must be a psychological thing.  I tried to eat a  piece of cheese last week that I had in my fridge, figured it was better to eat it then throw it away, but I put it in my mouth and spit it out, it was gross!  I threw it out.  I never realized how disgusting all that stuff was.  I just lost all desire to eat animal products.

Anyway, I was miserable on Long Island.  Hated my job, hated where I lived.  Just hated it.  I was there for a year, moved there for a job, a job where I was treated like dirt.  I got depressed, lost all desire to do good.  I was vegan/vegetarian for the first part on the time I was there, then when depression set in I just didn't care anymore, and went for convienence and turned back to omni diet for comfort and lack of desire to put much effort into cooking.  I was very unhappy, and lost interest in the things I enjoy doing, such as cook.

Then I found a new job, now my son and I are here in Illinois, in the country, surrounded by corn and soybean and vast flat farmland.  Beautiful here, really is, I love it.  The people are nice, my job is awesome, the daycare my son goes to is great, I am renting a cute little house with a nice fenced in back yard, so my son  has a place to play, and I have a place to have a garden next summer.  Things are really looking up.  So...I got my desire to cook again, and I ENJOY vegan food, it is fun to cook, and delicious.  So that is my story.

By the way, I am trying to change my avatar pic, but it won't change.  Anybody have any ideas?  I went to "my account" and changed the picture there, but the avatar pic won't change.

Whenever someone asks me if I want a nondescript non-vegan item, I always reply, “no, I can’t eat that.”

and for as long as I can remember, my aunt has always said, in a very cruel-like manner, “you can eat it, you just choose not to.”

I always took this as an insult (as she meant it) and never really thought much about it; however, now that I’ve considered this, it seems to me that it’s true.

I choose not to eat animal products - I can eat whatever the hell I want.

But the thing is, I don’t want to. I don’t want to eat animals or animal by-products.

So instead of taking what she says to heart in a bad way, I’m going to take it as a personal compliment, whether or not she intends it that way. And I wont let her know I’m ok with it, either.

So, from now on, instead of saying, “I can’t eat that,” I’m going to say, “I don’t eat that.”

Because that’s what veganism is about - choices.

it's not about the label; it's about you perceive the label. don't think of "vegan" as such a bad thing; rather, think of it in a positive light.
