Lent

Anyone else out there giving up something for Lent?  Back in college I used to give up fast food, but now I don't eat it anymore!!  This year I'm skipping out on ALL sweets and coffee for 40 days...it's gonna get rough  :-\

Icephrosty!

We never did the give-up-something-for-lent thing growing up, though we were big on no meat on fridays. (Since my family doesn't like fish it meant that fridays were a vegetarian... this was actually a really big influence in my originally becoming vegetarian.)

I gave up coffee one year, and felt awesome for all of lent. No jitters or anything. So what did I do at midnight on Easter? Yup, downed an entire french-press full of it...

I said I would give up Facebook for lent, checking it only on Sundays. But I forgot this morning was Ash Wednesday. Do you think it's too late to start?

I would say Josh Hartnett, but I gave up on his ability to act a long time ago.

I was raised not to give something up for lent (you do realize you can have whatever you gave up on Sundays, right?) and instead to do more things for other people during that time.

I used to practice Lent, but I could never find anything to give up that really hurt like I thought it was supposed to.  Chocolate, sweets, whatever--don't really care.  And yes, it is 40 days when you exclude the Sundays, which makes it easy to me.

I feel like I should give up coffee for health reasons--it would force me to go to bed earlier.  But I's rather do that as an indefinite thing.

Ha!  Agreed.

Really? man, I grew up strict Roman Catholic and we were never allowed to have "free-Sundays"...I actually never even heard of this until a few years ago!

Good luck everyone!

Okay okay, since moving to Louisiana (where it seems like everyone is Catholic) I LOVE Lent. I'm not Catholic, and I don't give up anything... so...

Why??

Because all the restaurants have Lent menus and it's all meat-free! They even have specials and stuff that are vegetarian, and they don't look at me funny if I ask for no meat. It's normal!

I get to be normal until Easter!

:D

I am another one giving up all sweets for Lent.  Started off the day faced with a big box of chocolates that my boss had brought in to work...it's going to be a tough 40 days!

I think this is the coolest idea ever!

Back in the dark ages when I was a little girl we gave up meat (except fish) for the whole 40 days though on Sunday we were allowed beef and chicken.  I always loved lent.  Quess I was a weird child.  We had these huge jars under the counter that we would put any candy given us during lent.  We weren't allowed any candy during lent but on Easter morning those stashed candies were all ours!

I would love to give up farting for lent....twould take a miracle that.

Lent has barely started and I'm already annoyed by it. Most people I know refrain from eating "meat" on Fridays during Lent, but seafood is OK. And make a bigggg deal out of it like it's some huge sacrifice to eat shrimp instead of chicken for dinner.  ::)

It's never too late, lol.

I'm happy to report that my husband decided to give up all meat except chicken (at least he's trying), alcohol, and sweets.  I hope he'll be more willing to try my meals now  :)

I enjoy giving something up to test my will, plus it's helped me get over some bad habits/addictions before.  I never heard the Sunday rule, but it seems like cheating...I guess I'll suffer for my cause  :)

one of my coworkers gave up chocolate for lent.  me and some other coworkers didnt find out until we came in this morning for her birthday with homemade chocolate cookies (me) and a big chocolate cake (coworker).  haha.  she decided today to give up soda instead of chocolate.  yay.  : )

I've given up alcohol, and resolved to play freerice.com. And try to get work done on time - that's always been my weak point, and facing up to it is plenty painful.  ;)

I know that the Benedictines observe "Laertare" (Refreshment Sunday) on which they are allowed a few treats...I'm not Catholic myself, so rather than "giving up" I am "adding in"...making more time for prayer and contemplation. I was given a beautiful set of Orthodox prayer beads by a Methodist minister and have been using them for this purpose. Ash Wednesday slipped by me this year but I caught it Thursday.

I gave up chocolate, and added more letter-writing and meditation time.
