Need advice on making a flyer for yard work/pet care
So I am making these flyers for yard work and pet care to distribute throughout the neighborhood. I am an unemployed college student who really needs a summer job for some money for various things. Well anyway I am unsure about what all to have on these flyers to draw people in, not confuse them, be straightforward, and most importantly want to hire me.
So here is what I got going for the yard work flyer:
Mowing?
Trimming Bushes?
Planting?
Clearing Brush?
Minor Landscaping?
Gutter Clearing?
Mulching?
Sore Back from hard work?
This unemployed College student wants to help you with all the work you need to get done this summer to ensure your yard is in tip-top shape. So relax and enjoy your yard and let someone else take care of your yard for you.

.......and my pet care flyer:
Got Lonely Pets?
Vacationing?
Working Late?
Too Busy?
Let me help take of your pets while you are away on vacation or just simply working late or too much. This unemployed college student loves all sorts of pets and would love to take care of your pets when you can’t. I have years experience in daily pet care so whether its just a daily walk or a few week vacation I can take care of your pet. I can walk, feed, bathe, scoop litter, pet, or whatever else you need to ensure the best care is given to your pets while you are away.

SO... any advice is welcome I was unsure who or where to ask but I thought I ought to put it on some forum I am a member of on the web to get some opinions so I thought why not here? Any advice is much appreciated I just want to make the right flyer so I do get calls.
I tried to stay away from using "I" just so that it might sound a bit more professional and less egotistical or something. I also thought the detail about being a college student is important but I want to also say I need a job but want some better way of saying it other than saying I am unemployed.
ADVICE??????
Thanks!
also I should add to the yard work flyer I have very fair prices. Should I say something like most yards $15 since most are probably barely a quarter acre and thats nothing. Should I list prices for lot size?
Boy I sure hope someone can help me......
If your prices are competitive, you could add them to your flyer - Mowing from $15, etc..
Good luck!
Do you have references? I'd put something at the bottom like: Referrences available on request.
Good luck!! :)
Are you looking for help with the design...orrrr...?
I see the list of chores you mentioned being shaped like a funnel. You start with larger font and work your way down to smaller font. It gives the person a sense of "oh shit..I've got a lot to take care of..I should hire some help!" After you make your list, you say something like "who has time themselves for all this..I can help..yada yada.."
I personally wouldn't mention prices but "references available" isn't a bad idea. You want people to buy into you and prices will only open you up for someone else to offer something cheaper and cheaper is not always better.
Sell yourself and your confidence to do a kickass job with whatever the customer needs help. I hope this helps?
Peace!
Do you live a a decent-sized city? How strict are they about licensing and such? The only reason I ask is the the city I live in, which is only 30,000 people, has started to crack down on this big time. They've been calling and setting up appointments and then fining the workers big money when they show up without a license and insurance. They are even going after the parents of teenagers that want to mow lawns. I'd make sure that isn't a problem where you live before I put up signs.
Otherwise, I think you have some good ideas. I'd try to say as much as you can in as few words as possible.

They're really cracking down on people offering lawn services? Wow. I mean, I understand why but wow. I used to do all this stuff as a kid (paint houses, yard work, etc) and I think if I got busted for not having a license or whatever, I'd be scarred for life. Haha. Anyhow, back to the point...best of luck WhiteAppleEater! And yes, lbarte is right - keep it straight to the point.
I think the city is trying to plug the hole in the budget with fines for stuff like that. I hope they don't find out about my illegal pet rabbit.
Maybe you could call a few landscaping companies in the phone book and ask if any of them need part time help? That might be a more reliable source of income.
I would put the pet ads on a billboard in a pet store or an animal-specific place like that. And I like the idea about adding the line about references- it adds some peace of mind for the owner.
Yes I have some references but the person I have done the most yard work for and most pet care for moved and I dont know how to contact her which sucks for me. I really have a hard time with references because I have never been too outgoing until recently.

politicalmonty,
I like the oh shit all that work funnel. because honestly I do the same thing in my yard and I cant find time and MONEY to do everything I want to do.
I am really trying for that kickass job because I did one backyard a few weeks ago and really tried and even pulled some thistles when they didn't ask me to and I had to hand edge because I don't have an edger. I said 10 for the job and she countered 15. I am also trying to always be outside working in my garden and working on my yard to make it look the best and I started mowing in a pattern to make it look really nice.

lbarte,
that sucks about licenses if they started doing that here they wouldn't fine but end up deporting them probably! lol

greenT,
I like the billboard idea, my brother just suggested I make signs for the neighborhood as well as flyers. I will advertise yard work just in my neighborhood (100-150 houses) and do pet care advertising in a couple of neighborhoods within a few miles of here (500+ easily)
When I am looking for a service, I don't bother to call if I can't find out their prices first. If they don't have prices available, I just go on the next listing. Therefore, I think it is a good idea to have some prices listed, to give people an idea of what you will charge. If you don't want to put them on the flyer, maybe you could make a simple website that has that info, then put your web address on the flyer.
