OT? What does "vegan friendly" really mean

Okay, not sure if this is on or off-topic b/c I'm looking for shoes and not food. But in any event, what does the term "vegan friendly mean? Does it mean the product was made with no animal products, not very many animal products, or what? Does it mean the product is not certified vegan? Does it mean something else entirely? I'm an aspiring vegan (okay, perhaps "fallen" vegan would be more correct...but I'm trying) and so I'm new to navigating all this. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I think usually people use the term "vegan friendly" when talking about businesses and restaurants, for example. With regard to those, it means that there are vegan options even if the restaurant/business is not totally vegan.

;D We discuss everything!
If being certified vegan is a similar process as being certified organic, some people may have vegan products without bothering going through the certification process. When I'm looking for shoes and the material isn't stated, I call the manufacturer and ask about the materials. What kind of shoes are you looking for (casual, dress, running...)?
Thanks so much for the replies. I'm looking for a pair of dress shoes for work. And I actually found a pair I really wanted...but the description said the shoes are vegan-friendly. Which left me a little curious. But this makes me feel better and I may call the manufacturer, as Humboldt_Honey suggested. And glad to know I don't have to be too worried about going off-topic! Thanks.
