Reasons to like ourselves
Hello everyone :)
This year has been an eye opening one for me in terms of the realisation that I was pretty unhappy in my own skin, which spilled over into other parts of my life, and had been overshadowing things for a really long time. This was followed by the second realisation that feeling progressively worse for the rest of my life was not an option I wanted to entertain, so I had to try to do something about it.
Now I feel like I've made some headway and talking to others with the same goals has really helped me both retain confidence in what I'm doing for myself and keep me motivated to continue what I've started - and I'm enjoying the process.
I have also noticed that I'm not the only one on here looking to like myself more; quite a few of us here are starting to (or wanting to) take some positive steps toward improving our self image and I think it's absolutely awesome. So I thought I would start this thread - we all have different things that we struggle with, we may all have to go about it in different ways, but if we all have a similar goal some moral support could be really helpful.
I don't really mind what form this thread takes - I'm happy to leave it like the other "reasons to" threads where we just post reasons like the title says, or I'm happy to provide a bit more structure if you guys would like that: Perhaps a different idea for what to post about every week or 2, or some interesting activities people can all try and report back on, suggestions from you guys about things you have done that have helped etc... basically if you are interested in the thread let me know what you'd like to see from it :) I just think it could be a fun and positive little project.
So, let me know what you think :)
I like this, Ms. Theo. This has great potential. Out with the bad, in with the good. :)
Word! I'm in!
Theo, this is such a cool idea. I know the past year or two have been similar for me and I'd love to read about the techniques and ideas other people here use to keep positive about themselves and their abilities.
Perhaps we could have an advice giving week, a week where we tell someone else what we like about them, a week where we tell everyone what area we're working on right now, a week where we post inspirational quotes or websites...?
sounds good
I'm learning to stop taking things sooo seriously, and I like that about myself. I'm allowing myself to be the laid back person I always said I was, but wasn't really....
I'm comfortable in my physical skin about 75% of the time now. I'm learning to stop comparing myself to other people.
Those are the main reasons I like myself right now. I'm pretty awesome, and I know it!
i'm just the opposite. I'm learning how to be more serious. I'm way to laid back.
Ok. I'm typing this on my phone at work. Sorry if i get side-tracked or cut it short.
In my life, I've always had problems with the thought of never being good enough. In my eyes, I never thought I amount to anything.
It didn't matter if I was perfect or what I did was amazing - in my head..I was the worst at anything and everything. To this day, I still have little thoughts that try to push people or happiness away.. Or to keep people bouncing off me.
As of late, I've decided to fight back and take control. I'm in charge of me and my demons. I'm Josh fucking Montgomery. I control my situation, not the situation controlling me. I've been really happy with the results so far and I look forward to future success.
My reason to like myself:
- i'm a great dancer
- i'm smart and got into very prestigious universities
- I'm learning to stand up for myself
- i don't sell myself out to fit in.
theo, i love this thread. awesome idea!!

yea for you. keep it up
Montgomery is such a cool name, btw.
I too grew up being never good enough...in the first place, in our large family, girls were simply not-boys. As in should-have-been boys. Add to that the oppresive, abusive system I grew up in, and I had absolutely no self-esteem.
Well guess what, somewhere along the line I got some! Moving a good 7 thousand miles from "home" and making a deep and final break with those people certainly helped.
I like me very much, now. I like my life. I'll never be rich, I'll never be beautiful, and it's too late to be young again. But WTH, I'm to busy living to notice. Death will probably come as a total surprise, it'll catch me in the middle of something.
I have survived, and now I am living. I have learned to live with my limitations and to push those limits where possible. I figure, if you've been frightened enough to go insane and you actually haven't, you're pretty damn tough.
I am no longer willing to efface myself. I no longer buy friendships with meals, applause or self-deprecation. You don't wanna like me, it's your loss. I happen to be pretty cool.
I have learned to say "no" and I am learning to make it stick without getting hostile.
Montgomery is such a cool name, btw.
Thank you. I tell people it's a powerful name - Joshua A. Montgomery - translates to "man in charge". ;)
reasons to like myself:
i'm dependable
i'm a really nice person if u get through my hard "shell"
i do nice things for people, like bring them goodies i cook or even buy them a copy of skinny bitch cause they seem interested
i am getting over my issues which has made me such a happier person
i'm pretty damn it! even though my brain tells me otherwise
i have compassion for all living things
Awesome to see you all in here! Thank for sharing your stories and ideas for the thread (Catski, those are good suggestions!) and what you like about yourselves :)
I think that should be the first task: to say some things we like about ourselves - some of you have already done it!
Sorry, I went another way with my post. I'll limit it to things I like about myself. Even though I feel awkward doing so.. Ha.
I like that..
•I'm dependable/loyal and involved with my relationships.
•I can make people smile or laugh with my cheesiness.
•I can be very serious-minded.
•I provide a warm refuge for people.
•I'm true and sincere and I never sell-out..even when in the past I would sometimes self-destruct for always being true. This was me working against myself.
•I'm opinionated and will run my mouth but know how to use it for productivity, not just to bitch and moan.
•I'm in tune with the situation and tend to be very observant. Don't ever think I'm oblivious..I'm usually two or three steps ahead.
•I can be predictable but I do unpredictable things to show I care or love. Or just to change it up a bit.
•I do things the Josh way. Even if (on rare rare occasion) I choose to follow the crowd..I color the situation with my own touch.
•I like that I can always rise above the noise and confusion and can pull myself up and out of whatever is trying to bring me down.
I like that I am a loyal friend.
I have learned to listen...not just wait for you to finish so I can talk again.
I can see a situation from more than one perspective and empathise with the people on the other side. (This can be darned uncomfortable!)
I try to live "as if it were true."
I keep my word if at all possible. Fortunately I have learned not to just "shake my head and say yes."
i like that I can make my daughter smile and laugh.... I know the day will come when she will think everything and anything I say or do is just plain stupid, but for now she still smiles and laughs at me.
I like how I appreciate little things in the world such as the changing leaves and interesting shadows.

This is a great ability, which assures you will never be bored. :)

Note from daughters to dads: you're really weird and totally not cool but we DO still love you! Just stop telling the same joke over and over again, please.

Aaaand repeating the same stories that we know by heart about your sporting prowess....
(I'm not saying you do this, DP...just a suggestion).
Also dads should NOT trot around the house in their boxer shorts, and then tell their teenage daughters that wearing Bermuda shorts on the street is "indecent."
