SUNDAY LUNCH

My sister is about to hit on of the 'milestones' of age, and to celebrate her getting old my family and some friends are taking her out for a meal. This has all been arranged by her daughter, who assured me that the restaurant does do vegan meals, and everything is cooked seperately from the omnivores food. Fortunately for me, I didn't 100% trust her, and today I've contacted the restaurant. Apparantly, they don't do vegan food and I've been ordered a sunday lunch with all the trimmings. I'm fuming ! I know I haven't been vegan for long, but why does my family expect me to eat whatever THEY like ? Does anyone else have (or have had) this problem with familys ?  >:(

Perhaps it was some confusion between your niece and the restaurant or the person at the restaurant that spoke to your niece and and the one that spoke to you?

I would ask them very nicely to arrange for some vegan food.  Even if all you get is a salad.  I am sure that while the restaurant does not "do vegan food" they do make a wide variety of foods that could easily be made vegan by simply leaving the meat or dairy out of it.

Its really not that difficult for a restaurant to make a vegan meal for you, especially since you've given them advance notice.  I can't imagine that they wouldn't be accommodating, as long as you give them a specific list of food items that you will not eat.  Or like Cali said, just eat a salad.  Thats what I generally do if I'm somewhere without vegan menu options....I just don't trust the cook to prepare my food properly.

As for your family, they may just think your veganism is a phase and that it will soon pass, or at least go on hiatus during family dinners.  Thats how my mother-in-law is with my husband and I.  I treat her like I treat the cook at a non-vegan restaurant.....I don't trust her to make my food, so when we go over to her house for dinner, either I will cook for all of us, or we'll bring something of our own to eat.  I don't let it get to me.  At least my family is respectful.  But I also went vegetarian in 6th grade.  They're used to it.

Just been on the phone to the restaurant,I spoke to the chef and he admitted that he'd never cooked vegan food and that they would be willing to let me take my own food.  ;)b I'm so relieved that I can still go to help sis celebrate. My niece will be told (politely) what I think of her arranging meals out tho'.

he's never boiled some pasta and added some marinara?  he's never sauteed veggies in olive oil?  it sounds like he's a sorry excuse for a "chef"

haha, I'm sure he just doesn't know what vegan food is...
he'd probabaly be very surprised to know he's cooked a good deal of vegan food...

Yeah, whenever I bring a special vegan meal to an event like that everyone goes "woah...THAT looks good!"  Heh...I feel so satisfied when that happens!
