Vegan WIN

So. My omnivorous husband is a construction worker/builder's apprentice. And the other day he said him and some of the 'guys' got talking about food, he let slip his wife is vegan, cue: "so what, that's like, just salad and shit?" at which point he gears up and explains the huge variety of hearty, delicious, varied, tasty and filling food I make, and points out we barely ever even have lettuce in the house, and that we eat a lot more interesting food than any of them.

I call that a vegan win.

Here is my vegan win:  As of today, I have gone from being a regular vegetarian to a vegan. Yay!  I've been moving toward this ever since I became a vegetarian in August 2008, and listening to some old Vegan Freak podcasts helped answer my objections and lay to rest some fears, so I decided I needed to just do it already.  It doesn't hurt that my body has started to seriously rebel against dairy the older I get, which makes total sense, considering how unnatural it truly is for humans to consume non-human milk.  So here I am, a brand-new vegan!  It feels really, really good to me to make this change.  VEGAN WIN

that is fantastic, joey, it does feel good to make healthy decisions for your body, and I'm sure you'll start to feel really great physically as a result as well!  Congrats on making the step, and you're definitely in very safe company here if you ever need any advice/tips on veganising/finding the right products/recipes : )

LLG, I find myself in a compassion paradox - do I feel sorry for you tummy troubles, or glad that dairy may soon find its way out of your life? Meh, I guess I'll just have to do both. Hope you're fighting fit asap. :)

Fair enough. The dairy is actually giving me raging headaches as well as making my throat feel crappy.

I was at a friend's house last night and made the cashew Alfredo sauce from this site with fettuccine and veggies for my daughter and I.  My friend's kids asked to try it.  The kids loved it so much that my 2 friends tried it.  Long story short, everyone that tried it loved it and wanted the recipe.  My friend said it was as good as Olive Garden's.  It surprised me, because these are people who don't like anything that does come out of a box or the frozen food department.  The kids rarely eat anything beyond mac and chees, chicken nuggets, and tater tots.  They even ate most of the veggies, stuff they never eat.  It disappeared in no time, and they are requesting it for the next church potluck.

That's awesome.  My sister had a neighbor that raised their kids like that.  She would have them over and they would gobble up veggies like junkies.  My four year old niece loves broccoli and carrots.  I think if kids are given an option they would eat veggies...if you gave them a choice.  I used to love salad when I was kid.  Those parents I'm sure love their kids they are abusing them.  Not really.

Kudos on your vegan win!

http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=17310.0 Cashew Alfreda Sauce

This is the sauce I use.  I usually use about 1/2 pound pasta and a ton of steamed veggies.  The sauce is a bit bland as the recipe is written, because it says to salt to taste.  It needs about a full tsp of salt.  I add a tiny, tiny bit of nutmeg, a little extra garlic, and some onion powder as well.  I also add a tablespoon of arrowroot or cornstarch instead of the boiling pasta water, just because it is easier.  It works either way  Omnis tend to like things bland as far as spices are concerned.  Anyway, I have yet to find an omni that won't eat it.  My mother's husband ate it without ever understanding it wasn't made with heavy cream.  If you don't have a good blender, it takes 2-5 minutes of blending to get the chuncks out.

I think most American's exposure to vegetables is limited to boiled, mushy slime covered in cheese or canned junk.  They friend of mine that I mentioned usually boils a frozen bag of veggies for 10 minutes or so and serves it with sliced American cheese.  No wonder the kids dread vegetables.  In my experience, most kids will eat at least some vegetables if they are properly prepared and seasoned.  It is always funny to see the look on her face when she realizes that my food isn't nasty.

Last week at work was a *raw* vegan win!

We had a going away party for 2 coworkers. The lady planning the food told me she was getting salad and a veggie tray and asked if I could eat it, and I said yes of course and thanked her for thinking about me. I asked what else, and she said they were getting brownies. I told her I had actually already planned to make these 2 girls some of my cupcakes (which they've had before and loved) as a going away present, and would be happy to make more and bring them to the lunch party. So she canceled the brownies, and instead ordered fruit!

I'm raw, and I could eat *everything* at the lunch except the salad dressing and the VEGAN cupcakes!!!

Most people around there are used to my cupcakes, but there was one guy at the lunch who hadn't had them before, so I also ruined the negative stereotype of vegan food for yet another helpless omni.  ^-^

It's hard to believe, but when I started working there I used to whine to my husband about how lucky he was to get veg food at work functions and how I never would. It's never felt so great to be wrong!

wow Lauuren, that is v. cool, sounds like a great workplace!

my win of the week: we had a couple from our gym round for dinner last Friday, she's one of the trainers and usually eats low carb high high protein mega healthy meals.
My husband 'forgot' to tell me this before they came over so I'd prepared a selection of asian-style dishes loaded with carbs  including noodles, a rice casserole and fried rice... ha. Well they ate it all and enjoyed it, but I felt like a bit of a failure at the time.

But!  She told him this week that she can't stop thinking about the general tao tofu, and this morning at the gym she told me I have to bring in the recipe because they really want to have it again.  WIN : )

My dance partner is omni but apart from the bits of meat and dairy he eats, we have very similar eating habits (barely anything processed, loads and loads of fresh fruit and veg, lots of raw) so that's really cool. I completely respect his food choices, he's probably healthier than I am! So I've never ever tried to push the vegan cause at all (I'm not a converty type person).

For a while now though he has been choosing to get vegan options when he eats with me.
And then he told me the other day that he thinks he might try being vegan for a while.
And then last night he asked me about when I went vegan and if I did it all at once or gradually etc.

I haven't pushed for details, but I sense (at least a partial) VEGAN WIN!!!!!!!!!

sneaky sneaky... I like it!  It's like, just by living your awesome, environmentally friendly, healthy life, you can persuade others to do so without saying a word...

THAT... is awesome! I started work recently at a rehab facility, and at each mealtime, think "Man, I'd better never break my hip or anything: i'll starve to death for sure!' Glad to know I might have a chance at survival, after all, in such a scenario...

yay!

I had a couple minor wins recently
I had run out of soymilk last week, it ran out way faster than it should have , and my dad (who happens to be omni) brought some home a couple days ago, and said that he felt he should be the one to buy it because hes the one who had most of it
That was awesome, mostly because I had no idea he even went near it! :D and he dumped the last of the nonsoy milk down the drain, because, as he said "after having that soy stuff, this milk tastes horrible"

and he has been asking me to cook, which means he is slowly admitting that my vegan food is damn good :D

I asked. He is thinking about it :D Reckons he would have no issue giving up pretty much all red meat and chicken, and barely eats dairy anyway. Apparently fish and pork are the sticking points. Still, it sounds like an admirable idea to me!

sweet, sounds good, Theo!  Definitely any changes in that direction are good!

It was only because he ran out of his milk, but my husband had some oatmilk on porridge on Saturday morning, and in his coffee and really enjoyed it  : )
little win!
