Veganize Food Network

My wife and I recently visited Foodswings in Brooklyn, NY. It's amazing!!! When I regained conciseness after my food high, I instantly thought that Foodswings was meant to be on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. Our favorite foods have always come from diners, and we'd been to many of the places that DDD has featured...before going vegan. Foodswings puts most of them to shame, and is on par with the best of 'em!

Most of "us" LOVE food, and many even enjoy The Food Network. Sadly, we don't see much vegan love.

So that's why I'm here. We're campaigning to get DDD to feature Foodswings (and no, I have no financial/moral interest in the restaurant). It's a perfect fit for the show, and it gives vegan food some positive exposure on a rather carnivorous network.

Yes, I realize there are more pressing causes, but not only could this potentially get more folks to try eating vegan, it sure as heck would let us all feel a euphoric moment of pride. So please consider adding your support, and maybe even spread the word! Thanks!!!

There's really a petition?  :)  I wanna sign!!! I always veganize things, too. The Neeley's had this recipe for strawberry pie with pie cruse biscuits on top and I made that Vegan!! Really yummy. I like veganizing some of Giada DeLaurentis's recipes as well!

I think Food swings is gross, but I will certainly sign as I do agree there needs to be more vegan love on food network.

I signed as well. I think it's a great idea! :) I frequently vegetize (is that a word? lol) recipes from Food Network too, although sadly, we don't get that channel any more... boo!

Ah! Great idea. I'm signing away.
I know there are some mini-vegan cooking shows online... But it's so much more convenient on our beloved food network. :)

I DVR shows on the Food Network all the time but also have a problem with the lack of vegan content. I would bet that we make up a sizeable group of viewers.

I surfed their website months ago, and it said on there that they don't take suggestions for new shows unless its presented by a producer or something. I know, seems weird.

I went to their site after watching a vegetarian-themed episode of "Ask Aida" in which she used chicken stock (ok fine, but there was no mention on the episode of using veg stock).

I've also seen fish sauce and shrimp used in other cooking shows doing vegetarian-themed episodes. It would be SO refreshing for veganism to be acknowledged on a major network. People already have so many questions about it ("where do you get protein?"); something like this would really help, I think.

According to polls, only 2-4% of the US, Canadian, and UK populations are Vegetarian. Similarly, only about 0.2-2% of those populations are Vegan. So from that standpoint I would be interested to see how a network would make it profitable to run a show that focused on a diet that 98%+ of the population did not follow, and probably most would not be interested in even if it was presented to them in an appealing way. What I could see is them incorporating a few dishes here and there to raise awareness, but from what I have seen lately in my dealings with non veg people is a sense of slight hostility to being presented with veg options, so that probably wouldn't go over so well either.

I would be alarmed to see FN dedicate a show to veg cooking, as to get viewers it would most likely cast vegans in a negative light. I am envisioning some sort of "you aren't really going to eat that" kind of show.

I agree with evergreen. Its kind of like.. You can dream, but its really only going to be that. I hate the food network, anyway.

How long ago were these statistics gathered, though? New people go vegan everyday.

I do too Sea.

In the west anyway, standards of great food is what great things you can do with meat and dairy, while dishes that do not have either are viewed as deficient and not up to par. FN trying to do vegan or even veg is going to get them viewed as caving with the vast majority of their viewership.

Dessie: 2007 for the upper percentages. So at the rate of conversion we may have gone up a point or two.

I don't watch "cooking" shows on FN. I like the shows about cakes. I don't even have a tv/watch tv, though.

I don't think people are going to view it as 'bad' that the food network has a vegetarian show, though - many religions advocate vegetarianism, some people don't eat red meat and enjoy vegetarian food, et cetera. One show isn't going to kill the omnis.

If it was done, I suspect a network would want to push the health angle to make it more palatable to the majority of non-vegetarian viewers. That's good in the sense that more people might be inspired to cut down their meat intake but it might also associate us with humourless health foodies. Tough call, I mean, the network has to have the viewers and so a veggie show would have to be more widely applicable to non-veggies.

Or, you know, they could just decide to forget sound health advise spouted by lots of doctors & physicians and go in the completely opposite direction...

Case in point: a new FN show called "Meat and Potatoes."

A guy travels the US looking for the best meat. Yeah. I guess that's more in line with their constituency, huh?

There's a facebook page created recently to get Isa Chandra Moskowitz as a show host on FN. I, for one, "liked" it :) It probably won't amount to anything, but it IS nice to dream.
