What's your tough time food?

Hey all,

I'm not (that much) new, but don't post often. Love the forums and all you folks though!

My burning question, is, what's the food you can swallow when you're having a tough time? Like, you know you need nutrition, something, but can't fathom eating. I've been having the worst time getting anything down now for weeks. Ya know the feeling when you're hungry, but just cannot eat? You want to eat, but at the same time, your heart hurts too much and the thought of it makes you sick? Carbs, casserole, what, helped you feed yourself through a crisis??

Sucks big time!

I appreciate your answers all!

Much love,

Keri

smoothies are really helpful, plenty of health benefits and its easy to sit around and sip a smoothie.
dark chocolate, is amazing also has a bunch of health benefits including it stimulates endorphins and serotonin (natural antidepressants)

not recommending you attempt to eat your body weight in chocolate but its good stuff.

I would also recommend watching the french movie Amelie. that movie makes me feel better about life when things have really gone to shit.

best of luck to you keri, hope everything improves  :) :) :)(three smiley faces i normally only use one at a time, but you sound like you could use some extra)

For me, it's soup. Pureed or not, broth or whatever. Soup will go down when nothing else will. Hot, easy to eat, and comforting, particularly when I add a little dollop of white miso to my cup or bowl.

I agree with David about watching Amelie.

Yes soup! Does a vegan body good LOL

Soup, rice, Amelie and smoothies. All aforementioned, but i thought i would emphasize these. And ice cream. Nutrition to the soul!

I have a soup I use for this all the time. It's broth, carrots onions garlic and mushrooms (just a small bit of each chopped).

I simmer this, like a minute or 2, add a couple dashes of soy sauce, stir in a  big spoonful of miso, and either eat as is, or add some bean thread. Rice noodles are also good, but they soak up most of the liquid and I like mine soupy.  I garnish with insane amounts of pepper. It always hits the spot.

That's what I had last night. Add a little vinegar to that and you've got Hot and Sour Soup.

That's what we were going for!  :)>>>

I know what you mean...no matter how much I love to cook and eat, under extreme stress food just won't go in. Except soup. And even sometimes it has to be just broth.

I second the smoothies. Add lots of nuts, chocolate, agave, other food supplements like nutritional yeast, wheat germ, flax, etc....you will get the energy boost you need.
I also think toast with vegan butter on it is second to none on rough days. Especially pumpernickel.
Tonight I had toast and chai tea for dinner, just because. :)

Peanut butter or other nut butters are great for rough days.  Spread some on toast, put it in some type of grain, or eat it straight from the jar.  It is comforting and nutritous.

Today I thought of this thread. I was tired out and didn't want to cook but was also hungry. So I fried up a little onion and garlic, tossed in some mushrooms and added rice. Fried it about, seasoned, and stuffed my face with it. Not the healthiest option (not a veggie in sight!) but just what my inner child wanted.

I also like a banana sandwich: wholegrain toast spread with marge, topped with sliced banana, walnuts and brown sugar. If I have peanut butter I will sub that for the walnuts, but I love walnuts with bananas.

THANK YOU all for keeping this thread alive, I appreciate it beyond words!

I haven't found my answer, for myself quite yet. It's tough. I don't usually like prepared foods, esp. b/c I am a gardener. This can add to the guilt, if I just look at my own produce and think "yeah, don't really want to eat your goodness..."

I'm okay with my body, not great, but I actually don't want to keep losing weight, I realize the need to be healthy and take care of myself.

I wonder: for you all...about timing too..when depression or a bad event may hit your life...what part of the day do you guys "settle" with eating? Not trying to be part of the eating disorder thread, but I wonder....if you really can't eat, do you make yourselves do it anyway later in the day? I definitely can't eat in the am.

I do know I am sick of p.b. Having been poor as an Americorps pep too long, I will take decadent food tips if you have them. Example..do you splurge on a certain someting if you know you will be able to get it down? Like, is there a certain brand of something yummy to add to what would otherwise be a blah rice and beans, etc.?

Love to all! You all are so inspring to everyone.

Ohhh so sorry to hear you are going through this, I know the feeling too well. I have a tendency to lose the ability to eat when things are awful too :( You drop weight like nothing else and feel horrible but can't do anything to change it... ugh! What doctors have told me before is that if I can't eat anything I should drink something like a powerade each day just to get some sugars if nothing else. I know they are gross, but it does help you get through weeks without getting real food down. Doctors also usually advise that you do try, even if it feels impossible, put something in front of you every couple of hours and see if you can nibble at it. Anything, even a few mouthfuls, is better than nothing and can help start the process again because the longer you don't eat the less your body feels like it/wants food so it's quite self perpetuating.

Things that have worked for me to get it started again are slices of orange or tangelo (juicy citrus, really tasty but not very substantial so more like drinking juice which is easier), crackers (plain water crackers or rice crackers) with a little selection of things to put on them like tomato slices/gherkin slices/tofu or just vegan margarine, a few salt and vinegar chips, some miso soup in a cup to sip. Just making a little plate of things that are varied, bite sized, quite plain but tasty, and easy is a good way to go. Then you can just have it in front of you, try a little bit of each thing, or not, or just whatever appeals most right then, doesn't matter how much you eat. When you start to get through more of the plate other more substantial food might seem more manageable :)

I would also say, if crackers and miso don't appeal but chocolate or soy ice cream or something like that does - eat that. Healthy and nutritious food are the second priority after just finding something you can face eating.

I hope I've been of some help, and am sorry that things have left you feeling so awful. If you ever want to talk about anything, food related (like what I've said here) or otherwise send me a message :)

I know I'll always eat avocados with lime and salt, or popcorn, or anything spread with an uncheese sauce or sprinkled with daiya.

If I know I should eat, but don't want to, I try to at least drink something healthy, like water with a little juice, or some light broth, or herbal tea and something dry like rice cakes or crunchy toast or toasted pitas or crackers.

along with what others have said, i think that citrus things, congee, and bread-type things (either a slice of bread or crackers or dry non-sweet cereal, etc) are really good for nausea and not wanting to eat. Easy to digest, tasty but not so flavorful that it can be sickening.
