And next year is World Veg*n Year!  Congrats all of us on vegweb for bringing about a whole year of goodness!

I have already been planning on wearing my "Herbivore" t-shirt to class on Oct 1st.  Hopefully people will ask me about it and I can have the opportunity to spread awareness about World Vegetarian Day.  I had no idea that Nov 1st was Vegan Day though - I am excited that there is one more day to celebrate!  ;D

Yay, happy world vegetarian day!  So far I've only had go lean crunch with almond milk... not very creative.  Seems like I should have made pancakes or something a little more festive.
oh well!

Don't feel bad, I think mine only lasted a half day.  What do you expect at a university though?  At least someone must have seen it!

Hmmmm...well it WAS put up in Hall County.... The "self proclaimed" Chicken Capitol of the World....Ugh!  :o

Bookmama....no matter how much I complain about GA in general (which I do all the time)...and about Lumpkin County....I think where you and Bookpapa live must be a really really tough place to be vegan....It's almost amazing to me that you were both able to raise CeltKat as a vegetarian in that town....what did her friends think coming over to your house when she was growing up? What did you give them for snacks?...just curious....Even more so....what did her friends parents think of you guys? You're both so nice that I'm SURE it was not a problem...but after living in No. GA for a few years....I wonder....I do..... ::)

Well, it's a cinch there are no vegan restaurants, not even any vegetarian ones, 'round these parts. I'm happier eating at home than trying to find some place to eat out--meatymeatmeat, grease, and chemicals, yum.  :D The whole family (all 5 of us) was just vegetarian until last year this time when bookpapa, celtkat, and I started our transition into veganism. It's much easier to be anywhere and be lacto-ovo than it is to be vegan--at least that's the way I feel. We never had any issues and have always been very low key about it. We were just vegetarian and that's the way it was. Didn't really talk about it much.

Also, I am very much the hermit. It sounds terrible, but I have very few friends here and the ones I do have are enough like me that we seldom get together. The kids didn't often have friends over. Our younger two liked going to other folks' houses as much as having kids over to ours. Our younger daughter probably had more friends over than the othe two. Celtkat is probably just one or two steps less hermit-y than I am so she didn't have many friends over, either. Poor bookpapa. He's very outgoing but I guess there were enough of us to keep him busy. As little contact as we had with the friends' parents...well, they just had no idea "who we really were." (Sounds ominous...,eh?) Now our kids are our friends (and we feel so lucky that they are).

We understood early on that we were very different from most people around here (not just in our choice of what to eat) so we learned to keep our mouths shut and keep to ourselves. Since we were lacto-ovo, however, it wasn't difficult to feed the kids' friends. The few times we did, we could have mac and cheese or any other cheese-type dish, spaghetti (they never knew there was no meat in the sauce)...but the easiest was pizza--half and half or individual ones, whatever. Many snack foods are vegetarian--not healthy, granted, but they didn't have meat in them--so there was no problem there, either. We kind of went in and out of "health food" eating so our lives were always a contradiction, tofu and nutritional yeast one day and Cheetos the next. (It's a wonder the kids are as normal as they are. ::))

I really admire these young VegWebbers who are raising their children vegan. It's hard to be vegan ourselves in the world today but raising children that way is bound to be a challenge--worthwhile, but a challenge. Let's just say, I'm glad my child-rearing days are over, on many levels.  ;)
