food goals!

I noticed there are a few weight loss/get-in-shape threads going, but I didn't see anything about other food-related goals, so being the dork I am, I made a thread for them. :)

here are mine:

-start sprouting things! and figure out good ways to eat the sprouts.
-make granola, and fruit & nut bars
-eat more raw foods
-buy more things according to seasonality
-bake more bread!!!
-actually try tempeh
-keep my herb pot from dying like it did last fall when I brought it inside... :/
-add chocolate mint to my potted food plant collection, and dry it to make tea..mmm

EDIT: i forgot a couple:

-learn to make Dim Sum buns!!! MMMM
-actually try to like mushrooms
-emulate the chocolate tofu cheesecake they make at the Cornerstone...it can't be that hard.

also, longer term: start growing more of my own food. like, potatoes in a potato bag, and other things to that effect. (already have 2 strawberry plants!)

I hope other people contribute to this...I can't be the only one with nerdy food goals. :P

-Eat a larger variety of vegetables.  Buy more that I'm not as familiar with and keep making them until I get familiar with them.

-Splurge occasionally on different kinds of mushrooms.

-Grow more food and acquire more fruit trees, and get better at gardening so that 80% of my plants don't die.

-Try nutritional yeast

-Buy more good wine

ETA: -Learn how to use the pressure cooker, so I don't need to rely on DH every time I want beans in a hurry.

-Eat more raw

-Can and freeze more for the winter months
-Buy in bulk brown rice and beans
-use all the apples on my trees
-Try Broccoli sprouts
-Get a better dehydrator
-expand my raw eating menu from just fruits and salads to more complicated dishes.
-somehow get my daughter to love nutrtional yeast

4. Decided to stop eating eggs - so stick with it.
5. Try veg cheeses.
6. Make vegan cupcakes.
7. Never run out of soy milk at work (so i don't wind up using the reg. non-organic, antibiotic filled milk, yuck).

Invest in a microwave rice cooker.  My brown rice is now fluffy and delicious, and ready in under 20 minutes!

Where could one find such a device?

eta: I googled "microwave rice cooker" saw a picture, and I think I have one of these! I've been using it to make popcorn, so I don't think it's usable for rice... I also have a rice cooker/veg steamer, but I bought it second hand, without instructions...

Hey, since two of the goals here are "waste less" and "eat more dried beans," I figured you all would be perfect to ask:

How long do dried beans REALLY stay good for? I have some dried beans that must be at least a couple years old--am I good to go with them? They've been in a dry place the whole time--first in their bags and later in canisters.

I am pretty sure that there are "official answers" about how long to keep them floating around... but I find that Vegwebbers in general tend to share my more liberal definition about what "expiration" for food really means

I think a couple of years may be too long. I had some great northern beans for quite a while, and when I tried to cook them, they just wouldn't... cook. they were pretty hard, no matter how long I cooked 'em. I'd give the beans a try, but just to experiment.

I have new ones:

- grow more herbs/veggies
- eat less sodium! holy shite
- eat more raw meals...like one a week during the summer or something
- start eating with tempeh!

I have to say it's kind of comforting to see other people say things like "eat more greens" and "eat fewer processed foods."  Sometimes I picture you all as super vegetarians/vegans who can do no wrong  ;D  Along with those two, my other food goals are:

- Also to try tempeh!  I have tried it once, but found it really skunky tasting, but I have seen lots of advice on Vegweb on how to get rid of that, so I really need to try it again
- Start planning my meals better so I eat healthier and waste less food (ideally I would waste NO food)
- Make my own salsa...if I ever get more than 2 ripe tomatoes on my tomato plants!
- Make pie crust.  I never have and am kind of terrified...but the pie battle is inspiring me
- Have more dinner parties!

Let's see...how am I doing with these food goals!
- I still haven't tried tempeh, or made my own pie crust
- I have been doing a lot better with food planning and therefore wasting less food...it's an ongoing process
- I did make my own salsa! It was yum.

New food goal: Make my own Larabars!

UPDATE!

what food goals have I met since this thread started?

- I have tried tempeh - YUM! I bought a block for the first time today, not sure what to make yet...maybe something from vwav
- I have new herb pots and have grown some snap peas (no pea pods yet, but they're growing!)
- I have a big beautiful chocolate mint plant too!
- Made my own pie crust (so much easier than I thought!)
- Made granola
- have been trying to eat more raw foods, even for snacks
- Mushrooms! I LOVE creminis...I never thought I'd say that I love mushrooms, but I really do!

New goals:

- cook with tempeh more often
- start buying almond milk once in a while to mix it up
- grow even more edible things, like tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini, lettuce, garlic, etc
- veganize some old family recipes, like my oma's cabbage rolls and dumplings
- get one of those grow-your-own mushroom kits for the winter
- waste less food
- try to actually use up everything I have in my cupboards!
- make a bunch of tasty burgers from this blog!

This is cool. I see I have a lot of the same goals as others here.

1 Use dried beans more often. (I have a pressure cooker - but I never plan ahead for the soaking step)
2. Waste less food/produce.
3. Eat more whole foods/less packaged foods.
4. Give the farmer’s market near me a try.
5. Try new greens – kale, collards, chard, etc.
6. Buy more fresh fruit.
7. Bake more often.
8.    Try Indian food.

I'd also like to be able to buy more organic and buy ww instead of white pasta but there's the cost issues...

I'm in Southern CA. I've never heard of Aldi's. Just did a locate store search on their site and nothing comes up for my zip.

WW pasta seems to run $3 - $4/lb. in the grocery stores - I think it might be little less in one of the HFS.

If you're near a bulk food store, they usually have pasta. Mine sells all kinds - whole wheat, rice pasta (gluten free!), mutligrain, flax...and they all come in various shapes. :)
