food goals!
I noticed there are a few weight loss/get-in-shape threads going, but I didn't see anything about other food-related goals, so being the dork I am, I made a thread for them. :)
here are mine:
-start sprouting things! and figure out good ways to eat the sprouts.
-make granola, and fruit & nut bars
-eat more raw foods
-buy more things according to seasonality
-bake more bread!!!
-actually try tempeh
-keep my herb pot from dying like it did last fall when I brought it inside... :/
-add chocolate mint to my potted food plant collection, and dry it to make tea..mmm
EDIT: i forgot a couple:
-learn to make Dim Sum buns!!! MMMM
-actually try to like mushrooms
-emulate the chocolate tofu cheesecake they make at the Cornerstone...it can't be that hard.
also, longer term: start growing more of my own food. like, potatoes in a potato bag, and other things to that effect. (already have 2 strawberry plants!)
I hope other people contribute to this...I can't be the only one with nerdy food goals. :P
This is a great thread. I think meal planning for the week/day so it's not a big mystery of what's being made for the meal.... but spontaneous iron chefing is fun too :)
O O O!
Can i join?
This is a great thread and I do have some goals myself.
1. Cook more often (using VW recipes)
2. Try to cook dry beans
3. Eat more organic
4. Eat more raw
5. Cut all refined sugar/processed food
6. Make my own milk from seeds
7. Grow herbs in my kitchen window
8. Make flax crackers
Let's see how it goes.
Make edible brown rice.
Have you eever tried baking it?
some new ones!
- eat soy foods no more than twice a day (barring edamame as a snack)
- drink more water, I've been slacking
- make more smoothies
I remembered this thread today as I filled up a jar with mung beans to sprout! Thought it was time for a revival. Here's what I've accomplished:
- eating a wider variety of beans and less soy products
- baking my own bread instead of buying it...this streak has been going for a couple months now!
- still working on eating more raw food, but improving (depends when I have access to things I can eat raw - it was easy a few months ago when I could walk into the backyard and pick some plums, apples, tomatoes or pears!)
- sprouts are on their way!
- I have some dried chocolate mint hanging in my kitchen, along with sage, rosemary and a hot pepper from the garden
- drinking a buttload of water these days
- i've started volunteering at a local post-oil organic farm at my school. I get to learn about growing food, and take home lots of the stuff that we've harvested! so getting more organic food is easier now
new/ongoing goals..
- bake bread using different flours...rye, spelt, etc and throw in more grains/seeds
- try to grow some stuff inside on the windowsill of the kitchen, like herbs and more sprouts
- still trying to find those grow-your-own mushroom kits...
- eat more seeds and nuts, especially pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews and sunflower seeds
- try to improve my seitan...I recently discovered a seitan recipe that mixed gluten flour with regular flour, and I think that will be much easier to work with
- try to eat more raw foods during the winter, like fruit, and especially more raw vegetables
Hey this sounds fun! I love making lists!!! :)>>>
My super awesome goals:
- set up an area to sprout and start sprouting some seeds
- successfully make healthy homemade bread (that doesn't come out like a brick)
- try juicing some new veggies besides carrots and kale
- eat more whole foods (more beans, less seitan, more whole grains and less bleached out stuff)
- eat more fruits and veggies
- make my own cranberry juice with fresh cranberries rather than buying that expensive crap from the store
- use up the random bits of food in my cupboards to make room for the essentals
- stop buying junk food
- buy all my staples at the beggining of the month and then only buy produce the next three weeks.
A new one to add...
- do more wild fermenting! like sauerkraut and pickling and stuff!
my roommate is working on this right now. I recently tried her fermented carrots and her kraut and both are DELICIOUS. So i'm going to try doing it too...mmmm
Here are some bigger things to think about over the year!
1. Learn how to can. A farm near me has had classes in canning for the past two years. If they come up again, I will attend.
2. (after February 14th) buy a bread machine (I saw quite a few at the thrift store) and make homemade breads.
3. Save up for a vita-mix! I'm tired of destroying my blenders!
4. Maybe, just maybe, attempt a small container garden on my deck. At least an herb garden. I suck at plants.
This is me--so I thought I'd check in and see how I was doing
Count me in on wanting to cook beans rather than use canned!
Other goals--
1. Drink more water. Too much of my liquid intake is coffee and, on some days, beer
2. Comparison shop--make it to my local HFS store to get cheap tofu, fruits/veggies not on sale. (Bonus points for comparison shopping at farmers' markets).
3. Fewer processed foods, especially for lunches
4. Eat more grains, and don't have pasta every night (even cooking some rice regularly would help)
5. Less dairy!!!!!!
Beans--getting there. I cooked a big thing of white beans this week, and I've been switching to lentils for quicker meals. But still nothing beats the convenience of canned beans.
1. Drinking enough water has been my hardest NY resolution to keep. Why???
2. Getting better. I make trips to Whole foods for bulk grains and usually pick up tofu and on-sale fruits/veggies while I'm there. Still don't bother to do it to its fullest extent, though.
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. Yes!!!
1- stop eating sweets
2- stop over eating
3- eat more raw fruits and veggies
1.--eat more raw. Summer is nearly here, so it's something I feel like I can do!
2.--learn to make Kimchee. or Kimchi. Or whatever.
3.--grow my own vegetables in a garden
4.--make such delicious meals for my family this summer (I'm cooking!) that at least one omnivore takes it to heart and tries vegetarianism for a little bit. That's a BIG GOAL.
5.--instead of buying bread, making it for my family, thus helping them out in the long run, health-wise.
6.--get into a habit of making vegan cookies every week. I gotta get my baking skills up to scratch.
7. Make more raw vegan ice cream. :) YES yes yes.
I think that's it, for me.
Oooh! Good thread.
1. Eat less processed sugar. It's the only crap that I eat, and I should eat less of it.
2. Eat more raw
3. Eat more local
4. Make new recipes--work through new cookbooks
5. Cook for more people! It's the best way to get the message out.
Right now I'm just trying to not eat sweets. I have way too big a sweet tooth and usually eat sweets every day. I thought it would be impossible to do this but with 2 days down so far I'm doing okay. And it helps that I've made it a contest with my boyfriend that I'm trying to win!!
I'm a list lover as well!
- Drink more herbal tea (I have about $60 worth of tea!)
- Drink more water and less mineral water
- Eat fruits for breakfast instead of processed cereals
- Include more steamed or raw veggies in my meals
- Use less canned foods
- Buy a bread machine and make my own breads
- convince husband to reduce meat intake and eat more veggies ;)
