General Tao's Tofu

What you need:

1 (12 ounce) box firm tofu, in 1" cubes (frozen and thawed, if desired)
1 egg equivalent (e.g., EnerG Egg Replacer), prepared
3 tablespoons + 2 tablespoons water, divided
3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon cornstarch, divided
vegetable oil for frying + 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
3 green onions, chopped
1 tablespoon minced ginger
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2/3 cup vegetable stock
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon sherry, optional
red pepper, to taste
steamed broccoli, to serve

What you do:

1. Mix the egg replacer as specified on the box and add an additional 3 tablespoons water. Dip tofu in egg replacer mixture and coat completely. Sprinkle 3/4 cup cornstarch over tofu and coat completely. Watch out that the cornstarch doesn't clump up at the bottom of the bowl.
2. Heat oil in pan and fry tofu pieces until golden. Drain oil. Heat 3 tablespoons vegetable oil in pan on medium heat. Add green onions, ginger, and garlic; cook for about 2 minutes. Be careful not to burn garlic.
3. Add vegetable stock, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, sherry, and red pepper.
4. Mix 2 tablespoons water with 1 tablespoon cornstarch and pour into mixture stirring well. Add fried tofu and coat evenly.
Serve immediately with steamed broccoli over your choice of rice.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

:)>>>
This is AMAZING....my kids, LOVED it, my hubby LOVED it.....it was a total hit all the way around.....I didn't have green onions so I used just yellow onions, but it was still amazing. Next time I will make it with the green.
I also doubled up the sauce. After reading everyones comments, I thought it was a safe bet. ;D
The tofu didn't even taste like tofu!
Amazing!
Thank you!

Like so many others I loved this recipe! I served it over a stir fry blend of veggies (snap peas, water chestnuts, broccoli, etc). However I couldn't enjoy it to the fullest because of all the oil involved in frying the tofu. Has anyone tried baking the tofu or have any suggestions on how to cut way back on the oil factor? I love the crispy coating!

this recipe was great! i made it a few days ago so i don't really remember the prep time, but i do know that it was worth it! i had no problems with the sauce sticking to the tofu. i doubled the recipe like everyone said but ended up with wayyyy too much, so i just froze it for next time!

Ive made this several times, very tasty.
Last night, in the midst of preparing it I realized I had not enough broth ( I double the sauce recipe) so I used the juice of one orange and some water. I couldnt tastet the orange but this time I got great reviews, compared to good reviews. I guess the additon of orange juice would make it not 'general tao's" but still delicious.

Yum! This was very good! It took me a little under an hour to cook, but that will likely go down when I do it next time and know the recipe, and there will be a next time for sure! I also felt like I needed more sauce, so I will probably double the sauce. Thanks so much for sharing!

I saw all of the good things that everyone had to say about the recipe, so I had to try it. I loved it! I did bake the tofu instead of frying it. And I didn't have cornstarch (how I missed that ingredient when I went shopping I'll never know) so I used a 7-grain hot cereal mix to coat the tofu and I did not use any kind of egg replacer. I throughly enjoyed the recipe and I will make it again.  :smileteeth:

I've reviewed this recipe before. I just wanted to add that this time, I put the tofu chunks (NOT frozen or thawed), in soy after I pressed the water out of it and then rolled it around in plain flour. Then I pan fried the chunks in peanut oil. It came out perfect!! Like nuggets! No crumbling etc. like usual when I've made it with flax meal, or ener-g egg replacer. TRY FLOUR!

Just made this tonight. Sooooooo Gooooooood!!!
Just made a couple of changes based on other reviews. I omitted the sugar and red peppers and added sweet red chili sauce. Nice spice and not too sweet.
And double sauce was perfect amount for this.
Yum! Thanks for the recipe.
