What did you cook/eat today: Parents and Kids Edition!
So...who's willing to share what their kids actually eat on a day to day basis? My little girl is 7 and in 2nd grade in public school IN TEXAS, so almost everything she eats has to be homemade. She just ate hummus on toast and two pickles for breakfast because I'm busy answering work emails. Oops.
Yesterday:
B: vanilla Silk yogurt w/strawberries and blueberries. Chai for her, coffee for me.
L: Tacos w/black beans, spinach, salsa (avocado on mine), leftover rice
S: popcorn, smoothies
D: giant veggie stirfry (squash, broccoli, cabbage, baby bok choy, carrots, celery, green onion, garlic, snow peas) with tofu, steamed rice
We made some strawberry muffins (from Vegan Brunch) for dessert...and I had two glasses of wine :P
Other parents...chime in please?
Yesterday:
B: Fruit and silk yogurt, toast w/EB
L: Almond butter and agave sandwich, kiwi, baby carrots, veggie booty
S: Potato samosas, apple juice
D: Homemade veggie chili, corn tortillas, grapes
Second grade is turning out to be lovely! Because of several students with serious dairy/gluten intolerance, all the classes are only serving fruits and veggies for snacks, with a few exceptions like brown rice cakes and veggie booty. It also means no special birthday treats or holiday parties unless everything is gluten, dairy, peanut and egg-free. I never thought I'd say this, but thank goddess for food allergies.

Wow, that must be nice! My daughter just started 1st grade and the last snack they had, for example, was cheese crackers. Blech. Today was my turn to make the snack, and I did mini-muffins (zucchini chocolate chip). I hope the kids eat them! It's kind of a bummer to have to make so many snacks when Alethea never gets to eat the snacks there. But I'd rather have it be that way than have her actually eating that crap every day. At least she's cooperating with me as far as only eating her own snacks that I pack her...
OK, sorry for the rant! :)
B: Buckwheat waffles
L: PB & J, o'soy mini soy yogurt, spiralized carrots (you can see her making & eating them at: www.rhiw.blogspot.com !), nori, fruit leather, zucchini mini-muffin, and tings
D: Baked broccoli and bean burritos
B-mini waffles, cereal
L-crackers, tofutti cheese, lunchmeat, choc. pudding, fruit leather, whatever she ate at school(something involving pretzels, I am told)
D-sweet potato, cuke, peas, olves, pasta salad
D-ice cream
thought I would get around to contributing to this, since I read it all the time, hello all...
My daughter is almost 2 and can't eat much soy, but is starting to be able to handle some...she is a pretty good eater if her mommy would be a little bit better at time management she would probably be a great eater.
B: her favorite Soupa -bean and veggie crock pot soup, a slice ezekial bread w/ EB
s:a little rice dream ice cream
(I know before lunch ahhhhh)
L: tacos, (rice, black beans, guac, tortillas), tortilla chips
s: raisins, more rice dream ice cream, (sigh.)
d: making seitan as we speak for nuggets.
little 2ant I like that idea of a pancake to stuff things with, do you think any ol' pancake recipe w/out much sweetner would do the trick? thanks!
Yeah, I've majorly lucked out with regard to the dietary restrictions at school. Her two best friends both have milk and gluten allergies so it's been easy at play date and nice being around parents who get that food choices aren't arbitrary . I'm thankful to not have to struggle with the food debate at school!
B: Cereal, apple, chai
L: Chik'n nuggets, oven fries, silk yogurt, blueberries and blackberries
S: kiwi, sesame crackers, hummus, oj
D: Tofu, broccoli, carrot stir fry in sesame sauce, rice, edamame
S: Popcorn, strawberry sorbet
BGS, thanks for joining us! Seriously, don't sweat the (really) small stuff like ice cream. I make sure mine eats plenty of fresh fruits and veggies and gets lots of variety in her diet, but kids should be allowed to learn to truly love food and to build a healthy relationship with it. And that definitely includes pleasurable food experiences every day! Hooray for dessert!
Welcome, BGS! I agree, don't sweat the Rice Dream. It's the healthiest of most vegan ice creams anyway--usually just brown rice syrup sweetened. Not horrible by any means, especially when balanced out with other healthy foods!
:)
Thanks Quintess!
Today we did
B: veggie and bean Soupa (same as before,) with a few tortilla chips
s: crackers and hummus,(mostly hummus scooped up on fingers)
L: soupa, so delicious coconut milk yogurt
------s---probably some more crackers in here somewhere-------
D: seitan /breaded nuggets, (for her mostly the ketchup to be honest,) and more soupa...at her insistence
----and some more rince dream ice cream!
I loved the nuggets anyway, hopefully she'll start to like them a little more!
Yesterday:
B- Toast w/almond butter, oj
S- baby carrots
L- Tofutti cream cheez and cucumber sandwich, tortilla chips, black beans, a peach
S- strawberry, banana, oj, vanilla yogurt smoothie
D- Tempeh pot roast (in the crock pot), rice, roasted cauliflower (probably her favorite vegetable).
So I have a question for you guys. What foods do your kids refuse to eat?
I consider my daughter to be a fairly good eater and she definitely likes different kinds of cuisine, like Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, etc, but there are some things she thinks are down right disgusting. Absolutely no: mushrooms, raw tomatoes, avocado, eggplant, onion, most kinds of squash...I'm sure there's more. It's strange, because the stuff she won't eat sounds like a delish combo on pasta to me...
Absolutely no: avocado
Blasphemy! Change her immediately! Reform her! ;)
I don't have any kids, yet, but I like reading these.
she sounds pretty good mammaana!!!! I think onion is common, my daughter cries if she gets a big bite of it in guac from chipotle!
I know, who doesn't like avocado!? It's insane. She'd better grow out of it...
Getting up in time for her to get to school and for me to get started on my work day was hard after a three-day weekend. I sat down to write this and thought...wait, what did I pack in her lunch? Must get more coffee.
B: WW flax seed waffles topped w/vanilla silk yogurt, blueberries and cinnamon
L: Tofu spring rolls w/peanut sauce (leftover from dinner last night), edamame, strawberries and kiwi, rice crackers
She's going to the dentist this afternoon after compaining about a toothache in one of her back molars all weekend. In preparation for possible ouchy dental work, I'm making her favorite black bean and veggie soup and baking some soft rolls. Snack will likely be a smoothie. Do you guys have any advice regarding kids and dental work? I've never had a cavity. Weird, but very lucky. I'm worried about my little bunny!
I've never had cavities, either Mamaanna! We're some lucky peeps. No advice, sorry. My daughter has escaped dental work thus far (knocking on wood...)
B: toast and oj (needed something quick...she was taking forever to get dressed for school!)
L: Soy yogurt, nori strips, z-bar, applesauce, rice crackers, pistachios, and 1/2 of a pb&j
B-ww toast w/ almond butter and peach jelly
L-I packed a cream cheese, tofutti cheese, and tofurky sandwich, 2 mini-muffins, yogurt, banana, potato salad, kettle corn. She didn't eat much of it. I did hear she ate some dumb goldfish crackers. Those things are my enemy >:(
D-"tuna" casserole w/ peas and mushrooms
D- there will undoubtedly be some sort of bedtime snack
eta: mamaanna, how are your kid's teeth?
She didn't eat much of it. I did hear she ate some dumb goldfish crackers. Those things are my enemy >:(
Have you seen/tried/heard of the Shmooed Food goldfish crackers? I've wanted to make them for a long time. http://shmooedfood.blogspot.com/2007/01/vegan-goldfish-crackers.html
Hi! Thanks for the motherly support and concern. All's well in the toothly realm, thankfully. No cavities and a good, clean mouth. The source of her toothache is a molar that is loose because it has no permanent tooth behind it and the roots are withering as a result. Fortunately, she will lose the tooth naturally and her other teeth will fill in the gap. Her father has no #2 molars. Totally hereditary. Very odd because I'm about to have my second set of wisdom teeth removed...
She was an angel at the dentist though. We bought a couple of new books after as a reward for being so cooperative. She's spoiled ::)
Nmpixie, sorry to hear about the food struggles at school. It's a bummer. It's soooooo tempting for kids to just eat whatever looks tasty in the moment! Difficult for adults to resist as well. I wish you the best of luck!
I've tried that schmooed food recipe AC and it is really good, to me they tasted just like actual goldfish crackers, except the first time I added the cayenne I must have put in too much because they had a bit of a spicey after-taste, that was good to me but my daughter didn't like.
lets see today we had
b;Ezekial toast w/ earth balance, and raisins
,
s; chopped grapes
L:has yet to happen, butwill probably be the same ol' crockpot Soupa...
She didn't eat much of it. I did hear she ate some dumb goldfish crackers. Those things are my enemy >:(

I've seen the recipe, never tried it. I buy the non-dairy cheese crackers, and she loves them, but if I don't pack them, she'll eat the goldfish ones. Perhaps it's because I give her the other ones?
eta: thanks, mamaanna! Glad her toothies are OK.
B-2 mini-muffins
L-pasta w/ sauce, tofutti cheese and crackers, banana, seaweed, "cheese" crackers, ww pretzels, choc. pudding
D-ate the pasta since she didn't eat it at school
D-mint-choc swirl rice cream
nmpix- what brand of dairy-free cheese ones are they? i would like to have some on hand for quick snack grabbers!
Eco-Planet cheddar non-dairy organic crackers. They are even bright orange!
