Hair dying?

So, i often dye my hair pretty rainbowy colors. I use this brand Adore, and just found out it has collagen :-\ I was wondering if anyone knows of any cheap, good, animal friendly hair dye brands? (NOT manic panic, bleh, i hate manic panic) I get like a 4oz thing of Adore for 5 bucks. Eh.. Stupid hair dye
Keri, i think i did have a dream about you last night! i dont remember it, but i know right before i went to sleep you texted me about hair dye and i'm pretty sure my dream was like us dying hair or something, idk. hah.
I reallly wish i cut my own hair. I always want to but then i get scared, like once i talked my boyfriend at the time to let me cut his hair, hahaha, he had to go to a professional and they were like "what the hell did you do to your hair!?" I think if it was short i'd be cool with cutting it.
Hmm, i should find hair dye pictures, i think i already have some at the beginning, but i know i have more. heh.
Okay, so everyone has seen this pic i think, but, i really want to do all my hair like this! All the red tones somehow wound up on one side of my head and they looked so cool!

Yellow and black. This was december 08, school got all pissed off at me for this even though i told them it was platinum blonde that came out too bright.

Blue! This was covering up the bad manic panic dye job last summer (theres a pic of that disaster on the first page)

This isn't an exciting color, but i had my hair like this for a year i think.

Thats what i have on photobucket. I shall take pictures of the pink stripes i did yesterday and put them up when i feel like getting up
okay, so i just pulled out my huge hair colour collection. i'm going to list the brand & colour names of the fun colours. i'll leave out the "natural" colours.
what i have left of my punky colours collection is this:
flamingo pink # 1412 (deep hot pink)
rose red #1422 (a deep pink colour)
lagoon blue #1434 (the light greenish blue that you can see on the side of my head in the first few pictures w/ short hair)
turquoise #1440 (a darker blue with slight green tones)
midnight blue #1414 (almost black, very dark blue, fades into a more noticable blue)
apple green #1446 (very bright green, cakes, this is the only one i tried... found this treasure when it was difficult to find my beloved punky colours)
my RAW collection:
volcanic orange (super bright orange with a little bit of a burnt tone)
2 bottles of candy pink (hot pink, one of the prettiest as it fades... ends at a cotton candy colour)
purple passion (very dark purple, almost black, fades into a more noticable purple)
my special effects collection:
fish bowl (bright blue cakes, in the first style but third picture down i used this, lagoon, and midnight in my bangs)
i used to have cupcake pink which is identical to RAW's candy pink, and RAW lasts longer so you should go with the raw one.
my adore collection:
black velvet #120 (didn't colour my hair at all! just made it slightly darker and that's it, washed out almost entirely)
*rich fuchsia #84 (turned out purple which was disappointing)
purple rage #116 (purple... it would be better to go with raw's purple passion, though)
paint box (same brand PINK uses... the singer) collection:
purple haze (worked well, turned out nice and purple, but smelled bad and may not be vegan. it's the purple piece that's laying on the arm of my glasses on the right side in my "most recent" style in my halloween picture with the tons of purple eye makeup and the black and gold dress.)
*this is what adore's rich "fuchsia" looked like in my hair.

while i ended up liking the end result, it wasn't what i had in mind. i was QUITE disappointed since i wanted the look to be more of an actual fuchsia as in a deep pink with the black. i had tried to dye the back the black velvet in this style but it just managed to make my hair look a little bit darker but not black. i had to resort to a nonvegan permanent dye (that one is loreal starry night bright black). this was my first experience with adore and i think it ruined it for me. a couple of friends suggested it, but it was just terrible. it faded quickly, too. my hair ended up looking grey after only a couple of months.
this is what it looked like after about three months:

i had cut most of it off before that picture, but the tips had started looking funky and greyish.`
OH! i just found this picture. i had cut and coloured my hair and my friend's. she has the purple passion from raw and i have (faded but still decent looking) candy pink from raw:
hers was freshly dyed right before that picture. mine had about an inch of regrowth so i'd say it had been about three months. so it had gone from hot pink (candy pink) to more of a cotton candy pink. to give you an idea of how long it had been since i had coloured it, the back where it's short and spikey had been completely shaved (buzzed, not shiny bald) the last time i had coloured it. i know i shaved my head around septemberish and that was semiformal so it was sometime in december.
raw has decent staying power, but no where near the power of punky colours!
Go pack keri!
All the adores you've used are the ones i didnt try. hah.
oh and! heres my hair right now

cakes,
to get my hair that light i bleach it using ion powder bleach with ion level 40 peroxide creme developer. it is the best and fastest one i can find AND ion is much gentler on the scalp which is important if you're bleaching your hair multiple times. with my old bleach i had to bleach it six times and with ion i only have to bleach it three times with perhaps a spot bleaching. once i've bleached it to a white that MIGHT have a pale yellow colour, i DO use a toner to make it whiter. (it's still pretty white before i get to the toner... have you seen my pictures of me with white blonde hair like i have it now? that's how white i get it BEFORE i use the toner) if you have orange you use a violet based toner, if your hair has more yellow use a blue based toner. i usually mix it and use a blue-violet toner (i take half a bottle of blue and half a bottle of violet and it works well for MY hair).
also, you are going to want to do deep conditioning treatments before and after each of these bleachings. maybe even a clear henna treatment.
i use ion conditioners, shampoos, and styling products that are made for coloured hair (so it doesn't strip the colour).
also, how often do you girls wash your hair? if you wash it every day it might take some weaning to get your scalp used to it but i don't wash my hair more than once a week. when i was younger i washed it everyday and if i missed even one day then my hair would look super greasy. this is because my scalp was used to being stripped of moisture and compensating by adding oil. then i did every other day, then three days, then once a week. sometimes i can go longer than a week (two weeks) but i wash it when it needs to be washed. usually dandruff ends up being more of an issue for me than oil. i've been washing my hair only once every week or two for the last... nine years or so.
overwashing your hair will make the colours fade quickly. it will also dry out your hair, which if you just bleached the hell out of it you definitely don't want that to happen. i always go at least a week before washing my hair after colouring it. i use shampoo to wash out the bleach, but then only rinse the dyes out with water (non peroxide dyes are safe to just rinse out since they are only vegetable dyes). this gives the dyes a chance to set in stronger.
also, this may sound strange to a lot of people who grew up being taught that you must wash your hair with shampoo for it to be clean, but it gets just as clean if you only wash it with conditioner. the benefits of doing this when you have punky coloured hair are that you're only doing one process (shampooing AND conditioning will make it fade twice as fast) and your hair will not be dried out at all. instead of the conditioner replinishing the moisture that the shampoo just stripped away, it's maintaining the moisture that your hair needs to feel like hair instead of a broom.
in most of those pictures my hair looks pretty clean, right? i only use conditioner. the only time i use shampoo is when i'm washing out the bleach. sometimes i even use only water but if you do that method you have to do a lot of scrubbing. in the top picture of blue hair i had used only water to wash my hair.
another issue with using shampoo in regards to these colours is that the shampoo can throw the ph balance off on your hair. when you do that, it can add some funk to the colours... so like blues will look sorta greenish and reds won't look quite right. you know what i mean?
these cleaning methods are the same with my friend who i mentioned earlier who has the most beautiful rainbow hair in the world. she uses punky colours, dyes her hair on a completely white base, goes at least a week without washing immediately after colouring, and only washes her hair as needed and uses just water or conditioner. she is my mom's age (although she looks forever 17!) so she has been doing it like this for thirty years or so. she has perfected it and it shows. her colours look true and vibrant just as long or longer than mine!
also, cakes, thanks for the compliment. you're prettttty too! ;)
veganhippie,i agree... find punky colours! it's the only one i really recommend. too bad it's near impossible to find! i will have to ask my friend, but i think we've been able to find it on amazon sometimes.
sarah, thank you for FINALLY having a dream about me that i didn't have to alter to make it keriful. ;)b
also, the top picture with the many tones of red is my favorite! i love the way the shades blend together!
This seems like a fun thread. I'm so bored...I'm working a 12 hour shift right now with Security. taking a break. :). maybe Keri got her internet back. I was talking to her earlier and she lost the internet. Comcast is sucky sometimes. It kept going in and out all night last night. Bleh. But anyways, all the fun funky colors of everyones hair are cool.
P.S. - I just saw Keri's post about Ion Bleach. My god, that stuff is great. I used to have to stand up and bleach her head so we could apply the colors and it took like 14 something hours with the other bleach we had. Ion is fabulous and so fast! I too would give it a thumbs up!
sarah! i love the new septum ring and i like the stripes! i never tried stripes. how did you do them? the rubberband method that lubi (i think) suggested?!!
But anyways, all the fun funky colors of everyones hair are cool.
this is why brittney married me. she misses my colours as much as i do! ;)b
also sarah,
although i didn't pack, i did clean a little. i took out the trash and recycling as well as did the dishes. i was going to bake that bread but then the tv came back on which meant my internet was working again! yay!
Ooooh girl, you should at least give me the credit of doing your hair. (I think it turned out pretty anyway). I wish my shift would hurry up and end already. Only 9 hours and 4 minutes left! Ye-haw!
I only wash my hair like once every 4-7 days (Depending on how gross it is/what i've been doing) when its dyed pretty. But when its not i was everyday because then it straightens easier (if that makes sense) I condition the HELL out of my hair. I wish you could feel how amazing it is through all the recent bleaching/dying. The lady that cuts my hair is so amazed by how my hair looks when i tell her my dying stories (She used to dye her hair pretty colors but then it fell out so she stopped) I've never used toner on my hair or bleached it multiple times. Mine usually cooperates pretty well.
I wish i had pictures of my friends hair, she does THE BEST dying ever, like she can do crazy designs, she used to always do her friends hair. They always had pretty rainbow hair. I never go her to do mine though :( I've seriously never seen rainbow hair as pretty as hers, and it was longgg and she did hers herself! She moved to england though. sighhh. And on that special effects gallery site, the picture of my friend, she did her hair, but its only one color so you cant see how awesome it is.
I did the stripes with hair clips hah. I didnt have rubber bands or hair ties. I just like, clipped to make lines after straightening and covering that chunk with hairspray so it would stay straight. And i just like, got dye on a finger and colored in between the clips. if that makes any sense. Next feat will be cheetah/leopard spots!!!! I've done it on extensions before and it looked really good, so i'd like to try it on my hair. But i should be looking for a job. ugh. (but i might have one watching peoples pets through my moms friends husband and i dont think he'd be to crazy about like a streak of hair dye, but idk. hah)

sarah, you're adorable!
i almost got the indigo blue when i was buying adore.
we have the same toothpaste! i think it's the same flavor and everything! ours is tom's of maine wholecare plus whitening gel in spearmint. yours?
i LOVE love love LOVE seeing videos of you! brittney and i need to post videos at some point.
all we have are videos of our babies. like, kittie baths and hercules trying to make babies with his sister, jenny (which is why they got fixed a little early in their lives! eeks!).
maybe brittney and i will document our trip to oklahoma like kmk and ac are documenting their trip to cali?
not that we'll be able to upload it or anything. haha.
Yay for having the same toothpaste! haha. Thanks <3
I'm not a hair dying person, so probably shouldn't be posting here as I have nothing to contribute - but I love all the photos of all your gorgeous coloured hair! yah!! : )
Don't worry, I don't dye my hair either :P.
They say KoolAid does the trick. Haven't tried it yet though.
By the way, I'm new to VegWeb (http://vegweb.com)... still finding my way around it. :)
I've heard of someone else mentioning kool aid - i think it was on this thread -but not sure how it works......and we don't have it in the UK
I bought some stargazer violet hairdye on line just now. It says that it's vegan and can up to 15 washes (probably not on my silkly hair)
I shall try it over the Bank holiday weekend, when I will have 3 days to continually wash my ahir to get it out if it's too bright for work!
