Hair dying?

So, i often dye my hair pretty rainbowy colors. I use this brand Adore, and just found out it has collagen  :-\ I was wondering if anyone knows of any cheap, good, animal friendly hair dye brands? (NOT manic panic, bleh, i hate manic panic) I get like a 4oz thing of Adore for 5 bucks. Eh.. Stupid hair dye

I attempted dying my hair with koolaid. I dont think it really worked, it might have tinted it red. I actually think i might do this tonight. haha. Because i remember it making it really shiny and soft!
Also, when reading on how to get green out of blonde hair a while back, i found that lemon koolaid mixed wth shampoo helps! And did that with a little success.

Yay shell! I'm excited to see how it turns out

kool aid only works if you don't care if it looks like shit.

when i was younger (before i coloured my hair) i used food colouring and a mascara wand to put coloured streaks in my hair that would wash out in one shampooing.  if you want funky hair for just one day, try that!  (never tried the whole head... just streaks)

Heh, i've used food coloring too. My main thing when i was younger (like 12) i would ALWAYS color my hair with permanent markers. That wound up rubbing off on my friend who STILL does this and shes 17.. haha. I pretty much tried anything that had any hope of changing the color of my hair that i could find around here. Silly younger me.

i would use washable markers (crayola) and colour lots of multicoloured streaks in my hair.  i also used them to colour designs on my tongue!

like, i'd dry my tongue with a towel and then dot the markers on to spell out words, do pictures, or designs.

wooooohooooooooooo fun.  i miss being a kid.  i still say the ONLY good thing about being an adult is being able to eat ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (although that ice cream diet made me gain like ten pounds in four days... eeks!).

Ok I'm uber excited because I have booked in to get my hair dyed next week on my birthday! (I've NEVER actually gone somewhere and got someone to dye my hair for me!!!) I'm going here: http://www.hue.co.nz/ because they just do colour, and they use amazing organic vegan dyes!

Here's some backstory about why I'm so excited...

I've been dying my hair mad colours since I was about 13, my favourite ever being bright blue - I adore my hair blue, I want it blue forever and ever all the time...but as the only blue dye you can get here is manic panic (which looks fab but fades fast), I have often found it too expensive to maintain. And then, the crushing blow - I was happily blue headed while studying then was told on no uncertain terms that it didn't look professional and I might damage my reputation as an interpreter etc so I have sadly gone back to my natural boring dark blonde. But it's my 21st birthday, AND I WANT BLUE HAIR so I'm getting the colourist to do it mainly dark brown and put big chunky highlights of blue all the way through it. SO EXCITED!

And then it fades...

Also, seriously...manic panic works fine but fades so fast...I would love to try the SFX or particularly punky colours, rd! I just need to come to the states...

Make some one mail you it! if i see either around here i'll let you know!

So, here is my hair dying adventure of the day (yeah i know, i do it way to much, haha.)
I did more stripess and took pictures of how i did it! And i was too lazy to flip them so you can just turn your head to the side
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g260/SawahFace/get-attachment-2-4.jpg
So if you put hair clips in backwards they make good lines as a guide.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g260/SawahFace/get-attachment-7-2.jpg
And then in between them you use a finger and just rub hair dye in gently, and it usually looks all weird and spotty but then i take out the clips and touch it up some, andd this time i did two colors!

Yayy for purple and yellow :)
I've always wanted my hair to be purple and yellow, well i wanted all of it but this will do.

Sarah - that is awesome!  You should do your whole head....even though that would take a lot of effort and I'm sure you have better things to do

And then it fades...

I hated how mine would fade.  When I dyed my hair blue, it would eventually fade to a pistachio green.  It looked so ridiculous.

CK, that sounds like my hair after the green faded. bleh.

yaaaaah blue theo again!! : )

Sarah, love the stripes. Buuuuut if you made it black instead of purple... then you could be bumblebee Sarah, and how cool would that be????? Then see who says bees aren't worth caring about, huh!

I want to do black and yellow!!!!! But i only have rainbow colors.
Heh, if i did that i could wear my black striped shirt and huge poofy line dancing yellow skirt thing and wings and POW halloween costume (my mind is on halloween with all this recent talk of it)

Sarah I love your stripes! Meant to say that when you posted pics, no idea how I forgot...sigh.

Ok, dilemma:
The stockist in my city  is out of blue dye. Since my appointment with the hair dresser is tomorrow, should I: a) cancel the appointment and not bother at all, b) go to the appointment, buy blue off trademe (nz's version of ebay) and have white streaks until it arrives, c) go to the appointment and get another colour (red, purple, green, other...) or d) get another colour then add blue later since the original colour will most likely have faded a bit before the party...

ummmmm..... c) and do it purple? cause it's almost blue?

I don't know!  Gutted that the well-thought-out blueness plan isn't working out though : (

It will work! I will either do b or d, the blue is on its way up from christchurch at the moment...so its either weird white streaks for a few days, or purple then blue! :)

I'd go with option d.  then you get to have one funky colour now and then blue at another point!

oh hang on...if you buy of trade me is it something you go to pick up tomorrow?  With ebay you'd have to wait for postage (which is what I'm curerntly doing with my hair dye).  If you can get some to take with you to the appointment I'd get it off trade me......then try another colour in a few weeks too!  Oh no silly me just reread your post and it'd be white streaks until it arrives.
Option d then - if it won't look weird dyeing your hair blue over the other faded colour.

Hmmmm, by the time you read this you'll have prbably made your decision anyways.  Let us know what you decided.

*AHEM*
bump

that is all.

ps- i dyed my hair pretty. i will take pictures before i wash it. right now i'm trying to follow rd's advice of don't wash for a week. it is going ok except the roots are getting greasy (i dyed on thursday night i believe) and the ends are still horribly dry and fried feeling. the colors are very zazzy though.

I dyed mine back to blonde--not sure if I mentioned it.  I didn't like how it was starting to look like my hair was thinning due to the light blonde roots.

It was fun though, and I'd definitely do it if I had the money and time for the upkeep!  It cost $$$ for the girl at the salon to bring it back to blonde--don't really want to do that again.
