What's something that you wish was vegan?
I was thinking about this the other day... in the past 10 years, there have been big leaps with vegan substitutes and such... I'm thinkin fake cheese (though improvement is still needed, imho -_-), all these vegan-dessert-cookbooks, vegan marshmallows and some sorta vegan meringue mix. But there are some things that aren't vegan yet, or maybe could never be the same as when we last had them.
For me, I want a vegan copy of:
- These big, soft, M&M-speckled (I could care less about the m&ms) sugar cookies they used to have at Vons. I love all the sugar cookie recipes I've made with various ingredients, but I can't get these down!
- Crepes. Yes, the Vegan Brunch ones are awesome, but eggs are so central to the taste, texture, and cooking process of these and there and I've yet to find a good imitation that would pass with French people.
I know it's not the point of veganism to mourn about things you used to eat or "can't" have, but there are some things, specific or specialty things, that there are no good imitations of (while there are a number of things I think we got *down*). How about you guys?
I second brie. Also, Nutella. I miss Tuno terribly. Not tuna so much, though. I wish I could get the same flavor in my posole as the pork version. My husband says ribs and candy bars.
yeah, I don't think I have one.
Other than, I guess, a decent, convenient 'cheese', but that's more so I could wean my husband off real cheese, I'm fine without it.
I'm fine without it.
I'm fine! We're all fine! We're just wishing. ; )

haha, I know, I wasn't trying to sound superior
I just mean, I don't even wish for it, and am yet to think of something I do wish was vegan.

So wish vegan cheese was better...I miss the real thing so much, but I digress. I would like to find a vegan version of sour cream that actually tastes like sour cream. Tofutti is like a mind trick, it looks real so I can pretend, but it tastes bad, and nothing at all like actual sour cream, which I remember so well because I used to eat it out of the container with a spoon (gross right?) Anyway, that and vegan "milk choclate". I am not a huge fan of the dark stuff so ehh..that would be good.
Fish and also, all cheese so I could get pizza anywhere. I love pizza but sometimes I don't just want a cheeseless pizza if I order out or go to a restaurant. I don't miss cheese per se, just the freedom to get cheese on my pizza.
That all pasta was made without eggs.
nmpixie, hazelnut chocoreale is just like nutella but it's vegan and more expensive. totally worth it though. and your husband should try the go max go bars! yummy!!
I wish vegan alternatives weren't 10 times a expensive as the non-vegan versions.
OH!! Cheese loaf. That totally disgusting cheap Oscar Mayer ham with chunks of cheese throughout. Man, that stuff was absolute junk, but it was tasty.
, "cream" donuts ( it wasn't real cream but I still think it had milk in
Though to be honest, mostly there's nothing I miss. At all. The above are just passing fancies.
Theo this just means you have to make your way over to Portland or Seattle. I've had delicious, vegan, cream filled donuts in both cities :)
i wanna move to Oregon. Seriously. Especially if they have vegan creme donuts.
I forgot Snickers bars.
I forgot Snickers bars.
The Max Go bars, whatever they're called (Twilight, Jokerz, and something else? Mahalo.), are pretty good. But I've yet to find them locally :/

ooh, I'm gonna look up the chocoreale. Go max go are too expensive! Maybe after he starts his 2nd job...thanks algae!
Also, nerds.

I've found cheap-ass versions of nutella/chocoreale (and non-dairy) at some Kosher markets and, weirdly enough, an Asian supermarket. Not as high quality, but $3 a jar and still fatty chocolatey goodness.

This. I could actually do without the regular cheese if these two things were actually edible in their vegan versions.
I also miss marshmellow fluff. I could eat that stuff straight from the jar. I've had vegan 'mellows and they are not the same, plus like way, WAY more $$$$$$$.
I miss fast food. I don't mean Mc Donalds crap, but like I love jalepino poppers, and would love to be able to order some at a bar, not have to work for an hour to make a less than good version.
Yeah! Fast food!
My mom had some Smuckers brand marshmallow fluff (not really fluff, more of a sauce) that had no gelatin or egg white. It may have even been entirely corn syrup based (ick?), avoiding the refined sugar problem.
