What's something that you wish was vegan?

I was thinking about this the other day... in the past 10 years, there have been big leaps with vegan substitutes and such... I'm thinkin fake cheese (though improvement is still needed, imho -_-), all these vegan-dessert-cookbooks, vegan marshmallows and some sorta vegan meringue mix. But there are some things that aren't vegan yet, or maybe could never be the same as when we last had them.

For me, I want a vegan copy of:

- These big, soft, M&M-speckled (I could care less about the m&ms) sugar cookies they used to have at Vons. I love all the sugar cookie recipes I've made with various ingredients, but I can't get these down!

- Crepes. Yes, the Vegan Brunch ones are awesome, but eggs are so central to the taste, texture, and cooking process of these and there and I've yet to find a good imitation that would pass with French people.

I know it's not the point of veganism to mourn about things you used to eat or "can't" have, but there are some things, specific or specialty things, that there are no good imitations of (while there are a number of things I think we got *down*). How about you guys?

hespedal:  I made those cookies last year!  Thanks for reminding me about them.  They were awesome AND tasted like Girl Scout mint cookies.  I don't know where I found a vegan Ritz-like cracker, but I did.

I miss being able to order fried rice in Asian restaurants.  It always contains animal broth and eggs...

Faunablues:  Butterscotch chips exist, you just have to get Kosher ones!!  :)>>>  I like this brand:

(I was so happy when I found these, I almost cried, no joke)

Also, to whoever said it, cedar lake dogs are REALLY good.  I like a ton of stuff they make, and everything I have seen so far is vegan.  If you live near a seventh day Adventist book center, they also sell a new brand of vegan corn dog that is DEE-LISH!! :)  The brand is heriatge something or other... I forget, but it's a light green box and says vegan on the front.  YUM!

I noticed a couple people said crepes.  I am a bit of a crepe fiend myself, and I finally found a recipe that meets my palate.  I think I found the base for it here, and made my own changes to my specifications.  It's posted on my blog if you want to see it:

I would have to say angel food cake and definitely some kind of whipped cream, like cool whip.

Yeah, and meringue. The kind that would set up crusty on top and soft in the middle.

Spekulaas. It starts with like 8 eggs and a pound of butter.

And I don't know if I mentioned meringue.

There are quite a few vegan recipes for spekulaas cookies out there. You should see some in a google search.

OMMG I used to love CBH!!!
My friend just made a vegan version using beans. She is supposed to send me the recipe. That shit was so gross and good at the same time. It really has to be the seasonings, not the beef, that made it good. From a can, no less! UGH!!!

Never had it.  It most must be a Southern-ish thing?

If you mean Corned-Beef Hash, it's more a New England Irish thing. Leftover corned beef and boiled potatoes chopped up and fried together. Cabbage optional.

i had it once and thought it was repulsive :P so not really wishing it was vegan LOL

my main thing is candy... peachy o's, gummy bears (i know there are vegan versions but they just don't compare), starburst, sour worms... yep i have a candy addiction, but thank god for skittles being vegan now :)

PEACH O'S!!!!!!!!!!

starburst in the UK is vegan (and the flavors are a bit different). It's too bad they don't make them the same way here :/

I'm not a big fan of the UK Starburst actually. I had them a couple times and it's kind of not even worth it. Mamba are better at that point. Why can't gelatin be replicated properly? It must not be noticeable with Skittles because of the crunchy shell but when it's just the chewy factor you notice it's such a big difference.

I wish we had a vegan equivalent to the show Dinner: Impossible. "WHERE IS MY TEMPEH DISH?! I'M NOT SERVING THIS GARBAGE!!"
