What's something that you wish was vegan?
I was thinking about this the other day... in the past 10 years, there have been big leaps with vegan substitutes and such... I'm thinkin fake cheese (though improvement is still needed, imho -_-), all these vegan-dessert-cookbooks, vegan marshmallows and some sorta vegan meringue mix. But there are some things that aren't vegan yet, or maybe could never be the same as when we last had them.
For me, I want a vegan copy of:
- These big, soft, M&M-speckled (I could care less about the m&ms) sugar cookies they used to have at Vons. I love all the sugar cookie recipes I've made with various ingredients, but I can't get these down!
- Crepes. Yes, the Vegan Brunch ones are awesome, but eggs are so central to the taste, texture, and cooking process of these and there and I've yet to find a good imitation that would pass with French people.
I know it's not the point of veganism to mourn about things you used to eat or "can't" have, but there are some things, specific or specialty things, that there are no good imitations of (while there are a number of things I think we got *down*). How about you guys?
my husband :-[
I think vegan jalapeno poppers would be amazing...the ones with cream cheese not chedder(barf) cheese.
there is a recipe for them on this site under appetizers... they r really good!
what do i wish was vegan? oh so many things!
mainly convenience foods and junk food. :P
jalapeno poppers that i don't have to make... donuts (custard-filled, apple spice, blueberry, raspberry-filled) in grocery stores and donut shops around the country (not just on the coasts!)... sliceable cheeze for crackers... KITKAT BARS!... Ben and Jerry's Phish Food ice cream... fudgesicles... soft serve ice cream... Girl Scout cookies... a good boxed mac'n'cheeze... alfredo sauce at restaurants...
actually, maybe i should be glad that these *don't* exist or i might gain back all of the weight that i lost going vegan (and more!)! :D
oh yeah, Ben and Jerry's Phish Food!!! so good!! and have you seen those single servings containers they now make???
oh, i know! i hate that it's all dairy!!!! :'(
i mean, So Delicious has a lot of good flavors... but i still miss my Phish Food!
I used to freakin love Phish food! :( That is about the only ice cream I miss. Plus those little chocolate fishies were so darn cute.
I know it's kind of gross, but I want a vegan version of ham (especially spiral ham). And corned beef hash.
I've got the vegan bacon and even vegan pork chops pretty well figured out, but not the hams.
Oooh, explain the vegan porkchops(or post it)! I'd like some pork to put in my posole.

It's from a recipe that i altered. I think it was on this site (originally vegan fried chicken, i think). I have the revamped recipe at home, I'll post it later today for you. :)

animal_g, I forgot about shoes. If I find cute non leather shoes, they are either so cheap they fall apart or so expensive I can't afford them
i have been living in denial
thanks team!
i wish that like... most vegan options weren't soy based.

Do you have allergies?
I just ordered Daiya Cheese- the stuff everyone's raving about off Pangaea... I hope it is as wonderful and melty as everyone says... i bought both flavors!

It interferes with my thyroid meds, so I have to limit myself, and try to stick with the versions with less processing. AKA- a little soy cheese means no tofu later, and the tofu could be a meal whereas the cheese would be a garnish you know?

Yeah, gotcha.
Vegan TVPork Chops (altered from vegan fried chicken)
1 cup TVP
2 TBS catsup
1 veggie chicken cube
1 cup hot water
1 tsp seasoned salt
1/2 cup chickpea flour
1/2 cup Hodgson Mills onion ring mix
1/2-1 cup panko
oil for frying
1. Dissolve veggie cube in hot water. Add broth and catsup to tvp and let sit 10 mins.
2. meanwhile heat about 1/4 in of oil in a non-stick skillet.
3. Stir flour and seasonings into tvp. It should be a little hard to stir by the end and hold together well. Roll the tvp mixture into disks 1 1/2 inches wide and 1/2 inch thick. Place panko in a large plate. Thoroughly coat discs in panko.
4. Test your oil temp by tossing in a pinch of breading. It should sizzle when ready, but not smoke. Fry your tvp disks for about 3-5 mins on each side, about 6 at a time to avoid crowding.
5. Remove discs from oil with tongs and place on a plate covered in paper towels. Allow some oil to drain off. Enjoy with gravy, catsup, with tomato sauce and pasta, or eat 'em plain (my favorite).
Makes about 12ish "pork" chops. I apologize for the probably ridiculous fat content.n ::)
oooooo, I must try this, its hard to find "meat" recipes that don't call for seitan, I can't eat that. What is the onion ring mix? Its like a coating, yeah? Anything I could sub if I can't find it.
