What's something that you wish was vegan?

I was thinking about this the other day... in the past 10 years, there have been big leaps with vegan substitutes and such... I'm thinkin fake cheese (though improvement is still needed, imho -_-), all these vegan-dessert-cookbooks, vegan marshmallows and some sorta vegan meringue mix. But there are some things that aren't vegan yet, or maybe could never be the same as when we last had them.

For me, I want a vegan copy of:

- These big, soft, M&M-speckled (I could care less about the m&ms) sugar cookies they used to have at Vons. I love all the sugar cookie recipes I've made with various ingredients, but I can't get these down!

- Crepes. Yes, the Vegan Brunch ones are awesome, but eggs are so central to the taste, texture, and cooking process of these and there and I've yet to find a good imitation that would pass with French people.

I know it's not the point of veganism to mourn about things you used to eat or "can't" have, but there are some things, specific or specialty things, that there are no good imitations of (while there are a number of things I think we got *down*). How about you guys?

That sounds awesome! As if I care about fat content! You should submit the recipe. And it sounds like it would totally work for what I want it for if I didn't form into patties, but just fried the little bits. Yay.

oooooo, I must try this, its hard to find "meat" recipes that don't call for seitan, I can't eat that.  What is the onion ring mix?  Its like a coating, yeah?  Anything I could sub if I can't find it.

It's a coating you mix up, I've used it on sweet potato squash before with success. You can probably sub an equal amount of a mixture of GF all purpose flour, corn flour, paprika, salt, and some corn meal. That seems to be the bulk of the onion ring mix ingredients. I'm out of the mix, so I think I will have to figure out how to replace it next time I make them (hopefully sooner rather than later :) I will try to remember to let you you know how it goes.

Mmmmm, never tried it that way before.

i wish that like... most vegan options weren't soy based.

Good one, i've been reading that too much processed soy is bad for you.

I am tempted to try the Daiya cheese, but I'm from WI, and we practically bleed cheese here!  So it would probably be a let down for me, as I have higher than usual standards for "cheese".  But that is ok, cuz we are cheap and so would not be able to get it, so it is better if I don't like it, then I don't pine away for what I cannot have.

I don't think there's anyone thing that I wish was vegan - I have far too much fun trying to veganise things myself!  However, I wish that vegan things were more widely available.  Y'know, like if I'm out and about and want a snack - hey presto many vegan snacks available, rather than searching around loads for something that's not a packet of crisps.

Actually if I think more about it - I wish Quorn was vegan because that was nice from what I remember and they have a good range of stuff now.

I'm sure you can find something! I can't remember exactly what that kind is like, but I've had cocoa crispy things that were just like the regular.

Shell, I love to "hear" you talk!

eta: I used to really like Quorn too, but I think it made me sick once!

I wish Altoids didn't have gelatin.....or that the vegan version in the HFS wasn't so expensive.

YES please!! Dehydrated marshmallows in general, like the ones in hot cocoa packets.  Please, please someone figure out how to make these.

Umpquah Ice cream. I Think it is the one thing that I miss. In general though, I have been vegan for so long that I have forgotten about most things.

fluffy omelettes with jack and chedder cheese melted in them
Crepes
whipped cream that slowly melt in chocolate milk
brie

I know they're are vegan substitutes but they're really not there yet. The best I can say for the vegan cheese substitutes is that by eating them once in a while I have the strength to avoid dairy. But I haven't found any that can replicate that warm, melted,  stretchy  greasy goo that we grew up on. Not that I want it any more, if I eat it, I get really grossed out.

Also, I haven't had really good cornbread that's vegan. I don't know why, there are great vegan cakes and pie and cookies. The eggless cornbread always seems too dry and flat. Maybe I'll give up on cornbread and eat more polenta. There's too much wheat and sodium in cornbread anyway.

This cheese is AMAZING guys!!!  There is a chain around here called zpizza that has it as a topping option.  It's hands down the best veg cheese I've ever tasted, with absolutely no "odd" soy aftertaste.  Consistency is right on too.  It would be PERFECT for grilled cheese!!
