What's something that you wish was vegan?
I was thinking about this the other day... in the past 10 years, there have been big leaps with vegan substitutes and such... I'm thinkin fake cheese (though improvement is still needed, imho -_-), all these vegan-dessert-cookbooks, vegan marshmallows and some sorta vegan meringue mix. But there are some things that aren't vegan yet, or maybe could never be the same as when we last had them.
For me, I want a vegan copy of:
- These big, soft, M&M-speckled (I could care less about the m&ms) sugar cookies they used to have at Vons. I love all the sugar cookie recipes I've made with various ingredients, but I can't get these down!
- Crepes. Yes, the Vegan Brunch ones are awesome, but eggs are so central to the taste, texture, and cooking process of these and there and I've yet to find a good imitation that would pass with French people.
I know it's not the point of veganism to mourn about things you used to eat or "can't" have, but there are some things, specific or specialty things, that there are no good imitations of (while there are a number of things I think we got *down*). How about you guys?
On the fish topic, Franchia hands down has the best mock fish sushi I have ever had.
Second runner up is Soy and Sake, third is the soy salmon from Red Bamboo. Soy and Sake also has a Thai Salmon and Unagi Don. However Red Bamboo has a bread fish cutlet thing with tartar sauce which is pretty good.
I guess someone should come up with a really good hand crafted cheese like product.
My mom had some Smuckers brand marshmallow fluff (not really fluff, more of a sauce) that had no gelatin or egg white. It may have even been entirely corn syrup based (ick?), avoiding the refined sugar problem.
I may seek this out, I don't eat this for the health benefits, and not all the time, but marshmallow makes me so happy during those crazy PMS times!
nmpixie, hazelnut chocoreale is just like nutella but it's vegan and more expensive. totally worth it though. and your husband should try the go max go bars! yummy!!
ooh, I'm gonna look up the chocoreale. Go max go are too expensive! Maybe after he starts his 2nd job...thanks algae!
I've found cheap-ass versions of nutella/chocoreale (and non-dairy) at some Kosher markets and, weirdly enough, an Asian supermarket. Not as high quality, but $3 a jar and still fatty chocolatey goodness.
Yeah I've had some of the Kosher stuff. Just not as good :-/

Yeah, I mean, most people eat marshmallow fluff for the omega-3s and fiber :D

sauces and rice at mexican restaurants
gum-like hubba bubba or bubbalicious. or any kind of gum-even minty ones. maybe they are vegan? but I wish they did not have aspartame
I can't think of anything else! But I will add later when I do.

I think the hubba bubba is vegan? I haven't had it, but it's on the peta list. I usually chew Orbit, and sometimes other Wrigleys ones..except the ones with those bead things.
creme brulee.
Hmmmm, I wish Pizza Hut made an entirely vegan pizza that tasted just as good as I remember their regular pizza tasting.....and ranch dressing - I can make it, but sometimes I'd prefer it already be made and waiting for me.
Oh, and Boston Creme donuts....not that I need them...
I miss french onion dip that I don't have to make. It just isn't the same.
and dark chocolate is ok, but nothing beats milk chocolate!

I was jsut at a restaurant last night that had this and I was saying Oh my gd, I have to add this to the list! lol
Angel food cake -- that is def my #1 request! Honey roasted peanut butter.

Have you tried that rice milk chocolate? Can't remember the brand name, but it's vegan milk chocolate. Expensive, but really good!!!
Enjoy Life foods has a rice milk chocolate bar that is vegan. Its not bad, but it isn't going to beat Cadbury or Hershey's in a taste tests. Still, it fills a craving when I want some easter or halloween candy. And they have some that have crisped rice in them, my fave and GF too!
I want vegan cheese. I know that there are lots of good new brands out there, but...

But I want it plain, and with the "crack!" factor. (I mean "crack" in two ways)

I can definitely agree with both the pizza and ranch parts. I don't so much miss specific foods (except cheese, and I'm afraid to try vegan cheese because I know it just won't be the same), but I miss the convenience. It's a pain in the butt to know that I have to cook for myself all the time now.
my husband :-[
I think vegan jalapeno poppers would be amazing...the ones with cream cheese not chedder(barf) cheese.
